New “troubling sign” for U.S. housing market, according to report

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

As the U.S. economy remains on shaky ground, declining builder confidence marks the latest "troubling sign" of a weak housing market, according to a new report. Confidence among home builders fell for the eighth consecutive month in August, dropping six points to 49, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) released on Monday. The report marks the first time since the pandemic began that the index fell below 50 points. In a press release, NAHB Chairman Jerry Konter cited rising construction costs and mortgage rates for the weakened sentiment among builders. Konter added that in "a troubling sign" that consumers are now opting out of home purchases due to increased housing costs, the index found that August's buyer traffic number fell to a record low since April 2014, with the exception of when the pandemic first hit in the spring of 2020. Existing-home sales have fallen more than 14 percent from last year, according to … [Read more...] about New “troubling sign” for U.S. housing market, according to report

Donald Trump says Americans are angry over “attack on democracy” raid

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Donald Trump has continued to fume about the FBI 's search of his home, claiming the entire country is "angry" about it. The search warrant served on August 8 was part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into the discovery of classified White House records recovered from the former president's Florida home earlier this year. The National Archives had asked the department to investigate after saying 15 boxes of records it retrieved from the estate included classified records. FBI agents recovered 11 sets of classified records from Mar-a-Lago, including some marked top secret and "sensitive compartmented information," according to a property receipt unsealed by the court on Friday. The warrant cited potential violations of three federal laws , including the Espionage Act , which makes it a crime to release information that could harm national security. But the former president— whose actions on January 6, 2021 , as a mob of his supporters broke into the … [Read more...] about Donald Trump says Americans are angry over “attack on democracy” raid

The U.S. Treasury Department told India that an Indian ship picked up oil from a Russian tanker on the high seas and brought it to a port in Gujarat on the west coast, where it was refined and shipped on, said Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Michael Patra. August 15, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

LONDON — British drug regulators have become the first in the world to authorize an updated version of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine that aims to protect against the original virus and the omicron variant. In a statement on Monday, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said it had given the green light to Moderna’s combination “bivalent” vaccine, which will be used as an adult booster shot. Each dose of the booster shot will target both the original Covid-19 virus and the omicron BA.1 variant that was first picked up in November. Is the Mandate of ’94 Finally Running Out?

August 1, 2001 by www.theatlantic.com

In Washington, a midterm election is all about which party will control Congress. For most voters, however, the main event in a midterm election is the race for governor. After all, governors run things. And many Presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, used a governorship as a springboard to the White House. With 38 states electing new governors in 2001 and 2002, what can we expect? The answer is, big gains for Democrats. This will not be because of any big national swing to the left, but because of the normal workings of the electoral cycle. Go back to the antediluvian period in American politics, before the Great Republican Flood of 1994. Here's where the 38 states electing governors in the current cycle stood in 1992: 14 had Republican governors, 22 had Democrats, and two had independents. Then came the flood. In the 1993-94 cycle, Republicans picked up 12 governorships, giving them 26 of the 38 contested seats. Democratic … [Read more...] about Is the Mandate of ’94 Finally Running Out?

The union’s health plan made the announcement Friday, calling abortion “reproductive health care.” SAG-AFTRA Health Plan Adopts Travel Reimbursement Benefit for Participants in States that Prohibit Abortion https://t.co/4YdNIf4nHG pic.twitter.com/lSS7NCmsV0 — SAG-AFTRA NEWS (@sagaftranews) August 12, 2022 “All Americans should have equal access to critical, necessary, and often life-saving reproductive health care, wherever they live … [Read more...] about SAG-AFTRA Will Reimburse out-of-State Abortion Travel for Actors and Their Children
