Labour's Dr Rosena Allin-Khan's has ripped off a key scene from Christmas classic Love Actually in a quirky election video. The Tooting candidate has been posting video updates from the campaign trail over the last few weeks. But today's clip seemed somewhat familiar. Dr Allin-Khan, who as represented the seat in south London since winning it in a by-election, put the video on her Twitter account this afternoon. It shows her approaching a large Victorian house which has a "Conservative" poster in the window. Rosena Allin-Khan sets out her Christmas wish After doing a mock double-take the Labour candidate marches up to the door determined to win them over. A man dressed in a Christmas jumper (in the role played by Keira Knightley) opens the door while an unseen female shouts out "who is it?" Dr Allin-Khan, in the role played by Andrew Lincoln in the film, uses the same drop down cards as used in the film. Labour’s Rosena Allin-Khan calls on fans to fly the English flag with pride and reclaim it from the far right
Let’s fly the English flag with pride. Compare the hype of the 2006 World Cup to 2018, what’s missing? England flags. In 2006, I remember going into shops, bars, schools – you couldn’t walk 20 metres without seeing an England flag. Whether sticking out of a car window, bunting going across a school playground or hanging over a pub window - England flags were everywhere. Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s would have shelves full of all sorts of England merchandise – this World Cup, I can’t find any! The Robin pub in Jarrow is flying 300 flags to support the team ( Image: Getty Images Europe) Over the years, flying the flag has become more and more synonymous with the far-right – but why should they have any more right to fly the St George’s Cross than you or I? The English flag has become associated with the national front, the EDL and other far right groups– it frustrates me. It frustrates me because we have allowed this to happen. The shadow sports minister is a … [Read more...] about Labour’s Rosena Allin-Khan calls on fans to fly the English flag with pride and reclaim it from the far right

She said: “The final nail in the coffin, and the point of no return, was when we found my father unconscious on the floor, with blood on the walls and the floor, and a carer’s set of keys left next to him. “Following this, he spent one month in hospital.” ( Image: Steve Bainbridge) Her struggle to get answers has left her worried for others in the same situation. “If two young professionals can endure what happened in the following months in pursuit of answers I fear deeply for the elderly in our community, such as the 80-year-old woman who herself is frail, who is caring for her husband with dementia, and who is too fearful to speak out.” … [Read more...] about Rosena Allin-Khan MP describes finding her dad bruised and bleeding in a care home
Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns
Soaring inflation will hit Britain harder than any other major economy during the current energy crisis, the governor of the Bank of England has warned. Andrew Bailey said the UK’s economy would likely weaken earlier and be more intense than others as a result of the energy price shock that all European economies face. The situation was further exacerbated in Britain by the “structural legacy” left by Covid in the labour market as companies struggled with a lack of workers. “Unfortunately, there is going to be a further step-up in UK inflation later this year because that’s a product of the way the energy price cap interacts with the energy prices we have observed over the last few months,” Mr Bailey told a European Central Bank (ECB) conference in Sintra, Portugal , on Wednesday. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator “I think the UK economy is probably weakening rather earlier and somewhat more than … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns

Historic British-era Patna District Magistrate's office building, part of the centuries-old Collectorate campus, which was featured in key scenes in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' has been demolished, sending a wave of grief among heritage lovers and Gandhians. Bulldozers gnawed at the elegant two-storey main Patna Collectorate building, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, a couple of days ago, reducing it to a skeletal state. The building was felled as part of the redevelopment project of the Bihar government. On Wednesday, labourers carried away bricks from the mountains of rubble that lay deposited next to what remained of the old building, which once was the seat of the district administration and was said to have been constructed in the early 20th century. The building was also adorned with an ornate iron-made spiral staircase mounted on its western facade. Heritage lovers of the city had earlier appealed to the authorities to rescue its historical artefacts, such as … [Read more...] about British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed

Tories U-turn over Schools Bill ‘power grab’ after peers threaten revolt
Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has U-turned on plans to give the Government sweeping powers over academies in the face of a looming revolt. In a major climbdown, Education Minister Baroness Barran told peers that chunks of the Schools Bill would be stripped out after it was branded a Government "power grab". Rebel peers had been threatening a revolt over Mr Zahawi's flagship legislation, which is currently making its way through the Lords. A string of former education ministers sounded the alarm over planned national academy standards, which would give the Government power to dictate things like the curriculum, pupil welfare and the length of the school day. Academies are state-funded but independent of local councils, which means they should have the power to make these decisions. Peers had described the plan as a power grab by the Department for Education ( Image: Getty Images) In her letter, Baroness Barran admitted “concerns have been expressed across … [Read more...] about Tories U-turn over Schools Bill ‘power grab’ after peers threaten revolt
