Teachers face a harsh lesson as inflation drives up the cost of everything from paper to pencils before the school year begins, leading some to cut back on supplies - or substitute with cheaper items. "If you ask any teacher, Ticonderoga pencils are it," said Kristina Eisenhower, 35, an instructional facilitator. Yet a 12-pack of that popular brand costs $3.99, up nearly 25% from a year ago, on Amazon.com Inc . In parts of Arkansas, where Eisenhower works, teachers' annual $500 stipend for classroom materials has not increased in 15 years. "They're buying cheaper pencils, cheaper supplies, which in reality are not going to last as long as the name-brand supplies they've bought in the past," she said. To swear or not to swear
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn, said Clarke Gable in Gone With the Wind and walked off into the sunset. Supposing he hadn’t been so frank, would he have said “damn”? “Let’s be clear, my dear, I don’t give it a thought,” is not in the same weight category, nor is “My dear, I can’t be bothered, so let’s finish the movie and go out for dinner”. The point is, swear words have a role to play in life. This was something my teachers in school didn’t understand, making me write “I shall not use foul language” 100 times — or 500 sometimes — if I used the word “bloody”. When you use foul language, they told us, it is a sign that you are of low intelligence, a vulgarian in fact. It shows you can’t think of the right word, that your upbringing is all wrong and your ancestors are disappointed in you. Only idiots use words like that, they said, in case I hadn’t got the message yet. So much anger over such a simple word! I never got such lectures even when I made silly mistakes in … [Read more...] about To swear or not to swear
If Dalit Boy’s Family Does Not Get Justice, We Will Withdraw Support, Says Rajasthan BSP Minister
Rajasthan minister Rajendra Gudha said on Wednesday that if the Jalore Dalit boy’s family does not get justice, the MLAs who joined the ruling Congress from BSP will not hesitate from withdrawing support to the government. The minister of state for rural development also said that no incident of crime should be linked to any particular community. Gudha is one of the six MLAs who won the 2018 assembly elections on a BSP ticket but later joined the Congress. “The truth is that if the government does not take any action (in the Dalit student death case) and that Dalit family does not get justice, then we all will go an extent even if we have to lose our membership,” Gudha told reporters, while talking about withdrawing support to the government. In Jalore, nine-year-old Dalit student Indra Kumar was thrashed by a teacher on July 20 for allegedly touching a water pot in the school. He died on August 13 during treatment at a hospital in Ahmedabad. Accused teacher Chhail Singh (40) … [Read more...] about If Dalit Boy’s Family Does Not Get Justice, We Will Withdraw Support, Says Rajasthan BSP Minister

The season has come when many home gardeners, their numbers booming since the pandemic began, are being rewarded with fully matured, ready-to-pick vegetables and flowers. It’s also vacation season, and this summer travel is back. How do you maintain your garden and take advantage of all that homegrown goodness during extended trips away? Even experienced gardeners can end up with more tomatoes, beans and zucchini than they’d expected come late summer. Garden sitters are one answer. Some home gardeners hire professionals, while many just rely on neighbors and hope for the best. “It’s really hard to leave the garden,” said Theresa Fiumano-Rhatigan, a longtime home gardener in Brooklyn. She relies on her parents and other nearby relatives as garden sitters during her five weeks each summer in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. … [Read more...] about For hire or food, garden sitters save the day during summer
