Kate Middleton stunned a train passenger on his way to the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday when he emerged from a trip to the bathroom to see the royal chatting with his young son. The chance meeting came as Kate and Prince William undertook their first official engagement accompanied by Princess Charlotte at the commonwealth sports events on August 2. Matthew Syed, a journalist and former British table tennis champion, wrote of his surreal interaction with the future queen in his sports column for The Times on Wednesday. Syed was traveling with his son Ted to watch the table tennis event at the Commonwealth Games which is being held in the city of Birmingham. The former champion previously won a gold medal at the 2002 games in Manchester. "Five minutes before pulling into Birmingham International for the NEC [arena] I use the bathroom (we are traveling first class) as Ted waits outside," he wrote. "As I am doing my thing, I hear him talking to a woman in the vestibule. … [Read more...] about Kate shocks train passenger by chatting to child on way to sports event

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening lower on Wall Street Wednesday as traders absorb some discouraging news about how much Americans are spending. Major indexes were all lower in the first few minutes of trading after the government reported that sales at U.S. retailers were flat last month, even though forecasters were expecting an increase. Many households are spending more cautiously as inflation remains high and as interest rates rise. The S&P 500 was off 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nadsaq composite also fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 2.88%. European markets were also lower. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. Thirteen Migrants Escape French Detention Centre in 48 hours
Two groups of migrants comprised of a total of 13 people had escaped a detention facility in the French city of Metz in just 48 hours. The first group of five migrants escaped the detention facility on the night of June 28th after they were able to cut through the wire mesh fence. Two members of the group were quickly captured, with the other three migrants, two Tunisians and an Algerian, arrested a short time later. On June 30th, a second group of escapees, consisting of eight migrants, took advantage of the first escape as repairs to that section of the fence were still underway, Le Republicain Lorrain reports . A police car was parked in front of the area where the fence was initially breached, but that was used by the migrants as a step ladder to remove barbed wire at the top of the fence and then climb over and escape. The five captured migrants from the first group were brought before a court on July 2nd and were each sentenced to four months’ suspended sentences. … [Read more...] about Thirteen Migrants Escape French Detention Centre in 48 hours
Migrant Convicts Escape Custody in ‘Prison Break’ Style Plan
A trio of migrants managed to slip past security and escape the Hendaye administrative detention centre last weekend after executing an intricate plan to evade their guards. The three prisoners escaped the facility, located near the French-Spanish border, last Saturday at around 4 a.m. by first removing a metal door handle which they then used to smash the glass of a window looking out into a courtyard that was not accessible to the police on duty, according to a report from Le Parisien . Armed with a collection of knotted together bedsheets around twelve metres long, the trio used a water bottle as a counterweight to throw over the seven-metre high wall of the detention facility and used the makeshift rope to climb the wall and ended up on a roof where they managed to make their escape. At around 6 a.m. the prison’s roof alarm sounded. Officers attempted to get to the roof but were delayed when one of the officers did not bring the correct keys to unlock a ladder. … [Read more...] about Migrant Convicts Escape Custody in ‘Prison Break’ Style Plan
Little talk of rainforest protection in the Brazilian Amazon
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — In the Brazilian Amazon these days, it's nearly impossible to run for office talking up the environment. More common is a scene like this: A candidate for Congress parades a helicopter — the symbol of illegal gold mining — painted with the Brazilian flag, through the streets of the Amazon city of Boa Vista. He defends a gold rush that has devastated Indigenous territories and contaminated rivers. In a neighboring state an Indigenous candidate stops wearing green clothing in public out of fear of violence. Like all Brazilians, residents of the vast Amazon region will elect governors and lawmakers in October’s general elections. But as the campaign takes the streets, few candidates or voters are talking about current record-breaking deforestation rates or other environmental problems. Instead, many politicians vie for who has a bolder … [Read more...] about Little talk of rainforest protection in the Brazilian Amazon
New Connections Triple, 2021 Best Year for Offshore Wind Industry: Report
The offshore wind industry witnessed a three-fold increase in grid connections worldwide from 2020 to 2021, led by 21.1 GW of new installations, recording one of its best year-on-year growth yet, according to the Global Offshore Wind Report released by the Belgium-based Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The offshore wind now represents 7% of total global cumulative installations with the current global cumulative capacity of 56 GW. This is good news for the fast evolving renewable energy sector which is most critical for the fight against climate change, and looming energy crisis. The global report also recognises India’s ambitious goal of achieving 30 GW offshore wind capacity by 2030, despite being relatively new to offshore wind. The target was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP26 in Glasgow where he committed to installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuels-based power generation capacity by 2030. Setting the plan in motion, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy … [Read more...] about New Connections Triple, 2021 Best Year for Offshore Wind Industry: Report
Taiwan Shows Off Most Advanced Fighter Jet After China Drills
Taiwan displayed on Wednesday its most advanced fighter jet, the missile-equipped F-16V, in a rare nighttime demonstration in the wake of China’s unprecedented military drills around the island. Beijing staged days of air and sea drills in the Taiwan Strait this month after visits by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation to the self-ruled island territory. Taipei has carried out its own drills to simulate defence against invasion by China and on Wednesday air force personnel loaded an F-16V fighter with a US-made anti-ship missile in a “combat readiness” exercise at an airbase in eastern Hualien county. Six F-16Vs later took off for night reconnaissance and training missions, including two armed with missiles, according to Taiwan’s air force. “In the face of the threat from Chinese communist forces’ recent military exercises, we have stayed vigilant while establishing the concept of ‘battlefields everywhere and training anytime’… to ensure national … [Read more...] about Taiwan Shows Off Most Advanced Fighter Jet After China Drills

Will PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif Meet on SCO Sidelines in Samarkand?
Any time the leaders of India and Pakistan (or China) are slated to attend a regional or multilateral event, the media and strategy community dive headlong into a high-decibel speculation about the possibility of a bilateral meeting. Though not formally confirmed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit at Samarkand, Uzbekistan in mid-September 2022, when India inter alia is to assume presidency of the organisation as well as host the 2023 summit. The newly minted Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to attend, triggering another round of ‘talkathon’. A similar speculation had ensued before the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (June 13-14 2019) which was attended by Modi and Sharif’s predecessor Imran Khan. No meeting eventually materialised, except for a brief exchange of pleasantries in the delegates’ lounge. That too was disclosed not by India but the Pakistani foreign minister. … [Read more...] about Will PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif Meet on SCO Sidelines in Samarkand?
