King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will have two brand new thrones made for them to sit on during their coronation ceremony. In keeping with tradition, King Charles will sit in the historic Coronation Chair for the crowning and anointing section of the ceremony, understood to be the most sacred part of the coronation. The Coronation Chair was commissioned by King Edward I in 1296, with Charles to be the 27th monarch to be crowned upon it. It is thought to be the oldest piece of furniture in the United Kingdom that is still used for its original purpose. The fight is on to keep in Britain the only Victoria Cross awarded to a member of the RAF for its Far East campaign during the Second World War. The medal was awarded posthumously to Squadron Leader Arthur Scarf, who was killed after leading a daring raid on enemy Japanese forces in Burma in 1941. One of just 22 VCs awarded to RAF heroes for the War overall, it was recently sold to an unnamed overseas buyer. But the Royal Air Force Museum has been told it can keep the medal in the UK if it matches the £660,000 sale price by the end of April. Launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise £250,000 of the total, the museum said: “This medal, and Arthur’s Story, are too significant to our nation’s heritage to be lost from our shores. The Times story used data from a popular hunting app called OnX. The app uses publicly available state and federal records to show private property lines, critical information for hunters trying to avoid trespassing. Although the intention of the app’s creators wasn’t to spotlight the conflict between public land and private ownership, its maps inadvertently show how many public areas are surrounded by private property, creating landlocked pockets around the Western U.S. “The revelation that millions of acres of public lands aren’t really open to the public has increased tensions in several communities and resonated far beyond the audience for whom OnX was intended,” the Times reports.
