Three alleged Maoists, including a woman, were gunned down during an encounter with security forces in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat on Monday. According to State Home Minister Narottam Mishra, the slain left wing extremists were collectively carrying a reward of ₹30 lakh on their head. The Hawk Force, the State's elite combat unit raised to tackle armed threats, was involved in the encounter, said Mr. Mishra. The deceased have been identified as Nagesh, Manoj and Rame, the Minister said. The police also claimed to have recovered an AK-47 rifle, a 303 rifle and a 12-bore action gun from the spot. The encounter took place in the Bahela police station area of Balaghat, a district that borders both with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra and is nearly 450 km from the Capital Bhopal. MEXICO CITY — Six police officers were killed and four others were wounded Sunday in the northern Mexico border state of Nuevo León after they were ambushed by a presumed drug gang equipped with 10 homemade armored cars and heavy weaponry. Nuevo León state police said the patrol was outnumbered in the pre-dawn attack on a highway leading to a border crossing into Texas. The force said the officers performed “heroically” in the attack. State prosecutors said the dead included one female officer. There was no immediate information on the identity of the attackers. But the nearby city of Nuevo Laredo has long been dominated by the violent Northeast cartel. Nuevo León suffered heavy violence under the old Zetas cartel in the last decade. A Russian state television host warned that the country is ready to confront NATO as tensions between Moscow and the West continue to escalate over the war in Ukraine. Speaking on the state-controlled television Channel 1 on Sunday, television host Vladimir Solovyov said that Russia was only using 18 percent of its army in Ukraine and its military was fighting at "a peacetime" size so it was ready for "a direct confrontation" with the international military alliance if necessary. Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had a major setback on Sunday as it lost the parliamentary byelection to the Sangrur constituency, so far a party bastion. Simranjit Singh Mann, a known radical Sikh leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat by securing 2,53,154 votes. He defeated his nearest rival of the AAP, Gurmail Singh, by 5,822 votes. Mr. Singh secured 2,47,332 votes. The byelection is being seen as the first major test to ascertain the popularity of the three-month-old AAP government, which went into the Assembly polls earlier this year on the plank of its development work, and stern action against corruption, illegal mining and other “mafias” in the State. Three people were killed and two others injured after an Amtrak train crashed into a vehicle obstructing rail tracks near Brentwood, California, on Sunday, officials said. The East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said the incident was reported at around 1 p.m. after a car carrying five people was struck by a train while attempting to cross the tracks at an unprotected railroad crossing. Three people in the car were killed at the scene, while two others, including a child, were injured, the fire service told NBC's KNTV , based in  San Jose, California. One person was flown to hospital via air ambulance, while the child was transported to the same hospital over ground, it said.
