A GERMAN nurse murdered 100 patients by giving them drug-induced heart attacks so he could bring them back to life, it has been claimed. Niels Hoegel is already serving a life sentence for two murders and is about to stand trial on charges that he killed a further 100 patients at two hospitals in Germany. The suspected serial killer’s trial is due to start today in the north-western city of Oldenburg. Prosecutors say the 41-year-old’s motive was to impress colleagues by trying to resuscitate the same patients he had attacked. He is accused of committing the crimes during his time at a hospital in Oldenburg between 1999 and 2002, and at another hospital in nearby Delmenhorst from 2003 to 2005. Hoegel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders. He is now suspected in 38 cases in Oldenburg and 62 in Delmenhorst. OLDENBURG, Germany — Former nurse Niels Hoegel, accused of killing more than 100 patients in his care, will go on trial on Tuesday in the biggest serial killing trial in Germany’s post-war history. Hoegel, 41, has already spent nearly a decade in prison for other patient deaths, and is accused of intentionally administering medical overdoses to victims so he could bring them back to life at the last moment. He is to face questioning before dozens of victims’ anguished loved ones who still hope to learn the full scope of his murder spree. The trial in Oldenburg, northern Germany, is set to last until at least May, with the first hearing to focus on prosecutors presenting their case. Hoegel, who is already serving a life term, has confessed to dozens of killings. Investigators say at least 36 patients were killed at a hospital in Oldenburg where he worked, and about 64 more at a clinic in nearby Delmenhorst, between 2000 and 2005. Stephen PortMark Lucraft QC, head of the coroner system in England and Wales, approved the request by assistant coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe following a campaign by the four victims’ families.The local authority, Waltham Forest, will appoint a judge to lead the investigation. Montgomery County Detective James Wood is at the center of a new crime film about the investigation and eventual arrest of Kermit Barron Gosnell, the Philadelphia doctor that performed dangerous abortions on women which led to at least one death and killed multiple infants in attempted procedures. "Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” opened in theaters on Friday to tell the story of the 2011 arrest, 2013 trial and Wood's investigation, which eventually led to Gosnell's conviction of murdering three infants during attempted abortions, involuntary manslaughter, and numerous counts of performing late-term abortions.
