Transparency, Tax Stability Key Guiding Principles of Budget 2021-22, Says Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said transparency and tax stability were the key guiding principle of Budget 2021-22. Contrary to the expectations of a COVID-19 tax, the government has chosen to fund the budget stimulus through higher borrowing rather than increased taxes, she said while addressing members of industry chamber CII. While the Union Budget 2021-22 provides for enhanced capital expenditure by the government, it also envisages private sector participation in a big way, the finance ministry said in a statement quoting the minister. On the Budget announcement of setting up a Development Finance Institution (DFI), Sitharaman said the government will provide some capital and will also raise funds from the market. In addition, the DFI Bill will provide legislative space for private DFIs. The government proposes to set up a Rs 20,000 crore DFI with a view to mobilise Rs 111 lakh crore required for funding of the ambitious National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP). … [Read more...] about Transparency, Tax Stability Key Guiding Principles of Budget 2021-22, Says Nirmala Sitharaman
Gender equality is key
Korea first institutionalized a women’s rights body through a special presidential committee in February 1998. A separate ministry for women was set up in January 2001 under the first minister Han Myeong-sook. Enhanced women’s rights were regarded as synonymous with gender equality. After President Kim Dae-jung was elected, the ministry gained more significance as his wife Lee Hee-ho was a women’s rights activist. Two decades since then, young men today complain of reverse discrimination. They argue the law and system came from the patriarchal society of earlier generations. They point to the special quota for females in recruitment by public companies and the conscription for males only. They argue much has become equal between men and women and therefore males should not face extra duties. The glass ceiling still exists for women in their 30s to middle age. The childcare burden still primarily falls in the laps of women after birth. The social environment that hardens women to … [Read more...] about Gender equality is key
Britain’s Got Talent duo given microphones by mistake at audition set for stardom
A rapper/pianist duo will impress the Britain’s Got Talent judges this weekend despite only meeting in person on the day of their audition. Now the pair, who never intended to become a double-act, look set for stardom thanks to a mistake while microphones were being handed out. Rapper Quacey Goodman, aka Flintz, 22, had previously twice auditioned solo for the ITV show with no success. During lockdown, he connected with pianist Taylor Bennett, 17, via Instagram . Quacey asked Taylor to put a melody behind his rap but they met in real life only on the day of the audition as Quacey lives in Croydon, South London, and Taylor lives in Great Barr, Birmingham. They had rehearsed in person only once when producers accidentally offered them both microphones before ushering them on to the stage. Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know
Those nine legendary dot dot dots, that triple ellipsis typed out by Coleen Rooney before the fateful words “ Rebekah Vardy ’s account” intimate that she’d given this matter quite some consideration. That she’d hovered, finger on the trigger, for a long thrilling moment, before firing what she thought would be the fatal shot. Her Instagram sting operation had been going on for almost five full months by that point. Five full months to wonder where this deadly road might take her. She’d had all the days and nights she could possibly have needed to work through all the angles, to look down the many branches of history that would fork their way forward from that defining second, when she chucked that irretrievable stink bomb in to the players’ wives enclosure of English football’s VIP club. But even she, surely, did not see that she would be setting herself on this precise path. That it would lead to here, the witness box of the Royal Courts of Justice, where she’d be … [Read more...] about Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know

Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups.
