MERGING NHS quangos could save almost £800million, a damning report by the TaxPayers’ Alliance finds. Slashing the number of NHS management bodies from 19 to seven would improve efficiency and give NHS England more independence, according to a report. It would also halt “turf wars” between different management arms to focus resources on essential care. The report said NHS England should be modelled on organisations like the BBC or the Bank of England with budgets set by ministers but day to day management left to NHS itself. It highlighted clashes between NHS Improvement who deal with finances and management and the Care Quality Commission - who look after the treatment of patients. And it called for the abolition of the little known Independent Reconfiguration Panel and National Information Board. Cutting the number of quangos would save around £760m with savings to the Department of Health and Social Care of a further £40 million. Last night John … [Read more...] about Merging NHS quangos could save almost £800million, damning report reveals

The extra funding, to mark the 70th birthday of the health service, will mark a dramatic break with eight years of austerity. Christopher Furlong/Getty Images Prime Minister Theresa May is set to announce £20 billion of extra funding to Britain's National Health Service. The Prime Minister will claim that funding will come in part from a "Brexit dividend" because the UK will no longer be paying huge sums for EU membership. However, public taxes will also likely rise to pay for boost. NHS will receive an extra £20bn a year by 2023, Theresa May will announce – but she will warn the public that taxes must rise to pay for the boost. The extra funding – to mark the 70th birthday of the health service – will mark a dramatic break with eight years of austerity and follows a difficult battle with the Treasury for more funds. However, it appeared the annual real-terms increase will be little more than 3 per cent, not the 4 per cent pleaded for by … [Read more...] about Theresa May will inject £20 billion into the NHS by 2023
Theresa May has insisted a new 10-year plan will help the NHS meet key targets - as she admitted the health service was "slipping" against the measures. The prime minister conceded extra demand was preventing the NHS from reaching objectives on treating A&E patients within four hours, making two-month cancer diagnoses, and overall 18-week waiting times."We're slipping against the targets despite the fact we're actually doing more, the demand is outstripping that," Mrs May told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.Mrs May said her government had overseen the "biggest cash boost for the NHS in its history"."What the extra money enables us to do, what the long-term plan enables us to do is actually step back and say, 'How do we ensure that the NHS continues to be one of the best health services in the world?'" she continued.Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Sky News, ahead of the plan's launch on Monday, health services need a "big shift" to "focus on prevention as much as we do on cure".This … [Read more...] about Theresa May says new 10-year NHS plan will stop ‘slipping’ targets
NHS England today announced a 10-year plan outlining what it will be prioritising in the future. There are some big changes being made, with many areas of health benefiting from a cash injection. But what does it mean for you and your health? What does the NHS plan mean for you? Ministers last year announced the NHS budget will be increased by £20bn per year by 2023. The 136-page plan features shifts in money from hospitals to mental health and the community. Many medicines are to become 'personalised', meaning tests will be done before to identify mutations in genes and then using the most appropriate medicine. The NHS has already started this with diseases such as breast cancer, using the drug Herceptin for women with a mutation in the BRCA gene. As medicine develops, the idea is to have more of these sorts of treatments. The plan promises future children they will have their whole genome mapped to use targeted treatments. The drawback for these medicines are that they are still … [Read more...] about NHS Plan – what does it mean for you?
A SHOCKING 3.6 million people who don’t even exist are registered with GPs despite a crackdown on ‘ghost patients’, it has been revealed. Doctors in England get an average of £151 a year for each patient on their books whether or not they see them – and the number who are ghost patients have risen by almost 6,000 a week. The phantom patients who have either died or moved away are now costing the NHS almost £550 million – enough to hire 10,000 new doctors, reports the Mail on Sunday. Labour MP and chair of the Commons’ Public Accounts Committee, Meg Hillier, told the paper: “We are talking about a tremendous amount of money – as much as £550 million – that is being wrongly allocated to GPs with ghost patients on their books. “At a time of severe strain on NHS budgets, this could be diverted elsewhere on patients who need it.” Among the ghost patients were a person who died 42 years ago and a patient called … [Read more...] about NHS pays £543m a year to GPs for 3.6 MILLION ‘ghost’ patients who DON’T EXIST
