Star running J.K. Dobbins returned to practice Monday after missing all of last season with a knee injury, but the player the Ravens miss the most is Pro Bowl left tackle Ronnie Stanley, who is still out nursing an injured ankle that has been surgically repaired twice . Dobbins’ return created some excitement at training camp, especially for a team in need of a top running back, but this offense will suffer without their $98.8 million tackle. The Ravens have tried different combinations to replace Stanley, who is expected to return in time for the regular season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 11, but there is only one All-Pro at the position, and he’s still missing in action. Ja’Wuan James, who has played just three games since the start of 2019 , filling in for Stanley is causing concern. He might be more athletic than last year’s starting tackle, Alejandro Villanueva, but he is lethargic at times, possibly because he’s switching back and forth from both tackle … [Read more...] about Mike Preston’s Ravens observations on J.K. Ravens training camp observations on QB Lamar Jackson’s uneven day, the secondary’s depth and more
At the final open practice before the Ravens’ preseason opener, on maybe the hottest day of training camp, quarterback Lamar Jackson opened 11-on-11 action by making quick work of a depleted secondary. On his first drop-back Tuesday, he found tight end Isaiah Likely in a soft spot down the left sideline for a first-down throw. On the next, he delivered a quick completion to wide receiver Devin Duvernay over the middle. Jackson and his offense were missing wide receiver James Proche II, and tight end Mark Andrews was limited, but they at least had Duvernay and Rashod Bateman back. The secondary, meanwhile, didn’t have Marlon Humphrey (limited to individual drills), Brandon Stephens or rookie Jalyn Armour-Davis. It seemed like the start of a one-sided afternoon in the sun. It was — just not the way that Jackson would’ve wanted. In one of the offense’s shakiest performances of camp, he completed less than 50% of his passes. Jackson went 0-for-3 in his final competitive 11-on-11 … [Read more...] about Ravens training camp observations on QB Lamar Jackson’s uneven day, the secondary’s depth and more
Ravens QB Lamar Jackson wants contract talks over by Week 1 | NOTES
Lamar Jackson does not plan on continuing contract talks into the regular season, he said Saturday, giving the Ravens quarterback and team officials four weeks to agree to a megadeal. Jackson acknowledged after Saturday’s training camp practice that the deadline for negotiations was “coming up,” adding: “We’re going to be good for the season.” Asked whether he hoped to have contract talks over by Week 1, he said, “Yeah, for sure.” Jackson, who’s entering the last year of his rookie contract, said there were no updates on negotiations, which ramped up in June. If a deal isn’t reached by next offseason, the Ravens are expected to designate the 2019 NFL Most Valuable Player with a franchise tag, which would keep Jackson in Baltimore at least another year. Coach John Harbaugh said Jackson is “doing a great job” in camp, and players have said Jackson’s given no indication that the possibility of a record-breaking megadeal is affecting his preparation. “The business part of it’s … [Read more...] about Ravens QB Lamar Jackson wants contract talks over by Week 1 | NOTES
Atlanta rapper Young Thug faces new charges in RICO case
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta rapper Young Thug, who’s accused of conspiracy to violate Georgia’s RICO Act and participation in a criminal street gang, is facing six new felony charges along with four others linked to the case. A new indictment was filed in Fulton County Superior Court last week against the artist, whose real name is Jeffery Williams. He now faces additional charges of participation in criminal street gang activity, violation of the Georgia controlled substances act, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a machine gun and drug charges, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The new charges stem from what investigators found during Williams’ arrest on the original May 9 indictment at his home in Atlanta's upscale Buckhead neighborhood, authorities said. The initial indictment contained 56 counts against 28 people for alleged involvement in crimes committed on behalf of the Young Slime Life street gang. The updated indictment now … [Read more...] about Atlanta rapper Young Thug faces new charges in RICO case
Smokies to require parking passes beginning next March
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) — Beginning next March, visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park will need to purchase a parking pass to use the facilities. Park Superintendent Cassius Cash said in an interview the fee is needed to keep up with maintenance and staffing demands at the country's most visited national park. The Smokies have seen at 57% increase in visitors over the past decade with a record 14.1 million visits in 2021. However, appropriations aren't based on visitations and have remained relatively flat, Cash said. Due to a combination of deed restrictions and federal law, the park is not allowed to charge an entrance fee, so Cash said they had to look at other ways to increase revenue. In addition to the parking passes, the park is increasing camping fees. All the money raised will go directly into park staffing, deferred maintenance and operations, Cash … [Read more...] about Smokies to require parking passes beginning next March
Ravens tackle Ja’Wuan James hasn’t played since 2019 and is learning a new position. It’s a challenge he’s embracing.
Sweat cascaded from Ja’Wuan James’ forehead as he prepared to field questions from reporters after two hours of practicing in the ponderous heat Thursday. Even this bit of summer drudgery felt satisfying to the Ravens tackle after three seasons of absence defined by hobbling injuries, a pandemic and a contentious breakup with his previous team. Asked how badly he wants to be a normal, every-week football player again, James laughed. “It’s been a journey,” he said. “But we’re here right now.” Four years after he played his last full NFL season, James, 30, finds himself as perhaps the essential insurance policy on the Ravens roster, their hedge against the possibility of another injury-marred season from $98.75 million left tackle Ronnie Stanley. “I can’t wait to see him in a game,” coach John Harbaugh said. “He hasn’t played football in a while, so to see him out there with the physicality is going to be important … and really important for him.” The unavoidable number … [Read more...] about Ravens tackle Ja’Wuan James hasn’t played since 2019 and is learning a new position. The Spirit of Old West Point
FEBRUARY, 1907 (1858-1862) BY MORRIS SCHAFF I ON THE THRESHOLD SOME time during the winter of 185758, I received from the Hon. Samuel S. Cox, Member of Congress from Ohio, and representing the district composed of Licking, Franklin, and Pickaway, an appointment as cadet at West Point. I know it was winter time, for, across the vanished years, I can see the family gathered before the big wood fire, and my father entering, clad in his greatcoat — he had been to Newark and on his way home had stopped at the post office in Kirkersville—and bearing in his hand a large and significant-looking official letter. Removing his coat and adjusting his glasses, he opened the communication from Washington and read my appointment. Oh, the quiet radiance of my mother’s face! And never, I think, did fire burn so cheerily as ours burned that night, — and somehow, I am fain to believe, the curling smoke communicated the news to the old farm; for every field that I had wandered over from … [Read more...] about The Spirit of Old West Point
Antonio Brown Patriots rumors swirl after NFL star shares cryptic post
The NFL season may be only two months away, but Antonio Brown has seemingly not given up hopes of returning to football. On Wednesday, the star wideout shared a picture of him wearing the New England Patriots uniform, the latest entry in an ever-growing folder of cryptic social media posts Brown has shared as he looks to find a way back into the NFL. Aside from a siren emoji, the receiver did not add a caption to the picture to elaborate on his feelings. While guessing Brown's intentions is a difficult exercise at the best of times, the picture was interpreted as yet another indication the former Central Michigan alumnus aims to return to professional football after his personal life descended into chaos last season. Brown's nine-year spell with the Pittsburgh Steelers , the franchise that had drafted him in 2010, came to an end at the end of the 2018 season, when he demanded to leave Pittsburgh after his relationship with the franchise deteriorated beyond repair. The … [Read more...] about Antonio Brown Patriots rumors swirl after NFL star shares cryptic post

Ravens CB Marcus Peters, who missed 2021 season with torn ACL, and S Ar’Darius Washington return to practice
Ravens veteran cornerback Marcus Peters, who missed the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL, and safety Ar’Darius Washington (foot) returned to practice Monday, trimming the number of players on the team’s physically-unable-to-perform list down to three. Peters passed his physical, participated in individual drills for an hour and worked with a trainer as he works his way back from a knee injury he suffered last September. Before the injury, Peters only missed five games in six seasons. Washington, an undrafted free agent in 2021, only played in three games as a rookie. “Marcus is in a good place,” coach John Harbaugh said. “Ar’Darius Washington was back today. It was good to see that. We have a plan for each guy. Everybody has their own plan, so we try to bridge them back from the rehab part of it to the practice part.” Rookie cornerback Damarion Williams said Peters’ presence was a huge energy boost. “[Peters] is a big dog. He’s been making a lot of plays in the NFL,” he … [Read more...] about Ravens CB Marcus Peters, who missed 2021 season with torn ACL, and S Ar’Darius Washington return to practice
