Fuel firms accused of ‘rocket and feather pricing’ as petrol hits new high
Fuel retailers were accused of a “classic example of rocket and feather pricing” as the cost of petrol reached a new record. The RAC claimed significant reductions in wholesale costs for petrol mean companies have a “clear opportunity” to stop continuously hiking pump prices. Data firm Experian said the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts reached a new high of 191.1p on Sunday. Diesel prices reached a record of 199.1p per litre on Saturday, before dropping slightly to 198.9p per litre a day later. Poor have equal right to energy: Modi to G7 summit
Access to energy should not be a privilege of the rich and the poor also should have equal right to energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. In his remarks at a special session of the G7 summit in Germany, Mr. Modi said the clean energy sector has emerged as a major domain in India and developed economies should invest in this arena. The G7 summit was dominated by the Ukraine crisis but Mr. Modi referred to the ongoing war in Europe indirectly. "All of you will also agree with this that energy access should not be the privilege of the rich only. A poor family also has the same rights on energy. And today, when energy costs are sky-high due to geopolitical tensions, it is more important to remember this thing," Mr. Modi said in his remarks at a session of the summit on "Investing in a better future: Climate, Energy, Health". Death toll of children in Afghanistan earthquake rises to 155
The death toll of children in last week's devastating earthquake in southeastern Afghanistan has risen to at least 155, the United Nations said as the scope of the deadliest quake to hit the impoverished country in two decades comes into focus. The U.N.'s humanitarian coordination organization, OCHA, said on Sunday that another 250 children were injured in the magnitude 6 temblor that struck the mountainous villages in the Paktika and Khost provinces near the country's border with Pakistan, flattening homes and triggering landslides. Most of the children died in Paktika's hard-hit Gayan district, which remains a scene of life in ruins, days after the quake. Afghanistan's Taliban rulers have put the total death toll from the quake at 1,150 , with hundreds more injured, while the U.N. has offered a slightly lower estimate of 770, although the world body has warned the figure could still rise. The quake has also left an estimated 65 children orphaned or unaccompanied, the U.N. … [Read more...] about Death toll of children in Afghanistan earthquake rises to 155
G-7 leaders confer with Zelensky, prepare new aid for Ukraine
Leading economic powers conferred by video link with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday as they underscored their commitment to Ukraine for the long haul with plans to pursue a price cap on Russian oil, raise tariffs on Russian goods and impose other new sanctions. In addition, the U.S. was preparing to announce the purchase of an advanced surface-to-air missile system for Kyiv to help Ukraine fight back against Vladimir Putin’s aggression. The new aid and efforts to exact punishment on Moscow from the Group of Seven leaders come as Zelenskyy has openly worried that the West has become fatigued by the cost of a war that is contributing to soaring energy costs and price hikes on essential goods around the globe. Leaders were finalizing the deal to seek a price cap during their three-day G-7 summit in the German Alps. The details of how a price cap would work, as well as its impact on the Russian economy, were to be resolved by the G-7 finance ministers in the coming … [Read more...] about G-7 leaders confer with Zelensky, prepare new aid for Ukraine
As China shuts out world, Internet access from abroad gets harder too
TAIPEI, Taiwan: Most Internet users trying to get past China’s Great Firewall search for a cyber tunnel that will take them outside censorship restrictions to the wider web. But Vincent Brussee is looking for a way in, so he can better glimpse what life is like under the Communist Party. An analyst with the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin, Brussee frequently scours the Chinese Internet for data. His main focus is information that will help him understand China’s burgeoning social credit system. But in the last few years, he’s noticed that his usual sources have become more unreliable and access tougher to gain. Some government websites fail to load, appearing to block users from specific geographic locations. Other platforms require a Chinese phone number tied to official identification. Files that were available three years ago have started to disappear as Brussee and many like him, including academics and journalists, are finding it increasingly frustrating to … [Read more...] about As China shuts out world, Internet access from abroad gets harder too
Dos and don’ts: 8 tips that can help you find a date online
Paris: Faces, bodies, status and humour are all important in Internet dating, but the biggest success factor of all could be your name. So say scientists who found that people whose online name began with a letter in the top half of the alphabet - A to M - get the most "looks" from others. "Several factors make a difference when looking for love in a digital setting," said Khalid Khan, a professor at Queen Mary University of London. "Starting with a screen name with a letter in the top half of the alphabet is surprisingly important - because several measures of success, such as educational attainment and income, are linked to names higher up the alphabet. "Add to this the fact that search engines sort names alphabetically." Khan and Sameer Chaudhry at Barts and the London School of Medicine sought objective data on how people conveyed their attractiveness on dating sites, and whether others responded to it. They trawled through 3,938 studies into online dating, published … [Read more...] about Dos and don’ts: 8 tips that can help you find a date online
