At least nine homes were destroyed in the east London village after a compost fire burnt out of control during Tuesday's record temperatures . Hundreds of grass fires and other blazes contributed to make it the London Fire Brigade’s busiest day since World War II. The smell of smoke remained in the air on Thursday as a bus carrying residents returned to face the devastating scene, Metro reports. Those affected had been warned by the London Fire Brigade that their properties had been gutted by the blaze, which spread rapidly in the searing heat. Woman shares how she discovered neighbor’s rotting body: “That’s traumatic”
A woman went viral on TikTok after revealing that her upstairs neighbor unknowingly died which caused an infestation of maggots in her apartment. The woman, known as @lon333lygirl, posted about the incident on TikTok where it received more than 3.8 million views and 3,600 comments. The video can be found here . The woman's discovery comes just two weeks after police discovered a decomposing body inside a vehicle at a car wash in Kentucky. Lexington police told Newsweek that officers received a report regarding a "foul odor" coming from a vehicle in the parking lot. One week before that body was discovered, a third decomposed body was found in Lake Mead with the first two being discovered in late May. Human Decomposition While there are no national statistics in the United States about unexpectedly encountering a dead body, a report published in the National Library of Medicine found that it is more common in urban areas due to violence and drug use. As Switzerland Sees It
by CARL J. FRIEDRICH 1 BETWEEN the acts of the world première of Niobe a fashionable crowd gathered outside the Opera House at Zurich and looked across the lake Into an evening sky. Nothing in the attire or behavior of the crowd of well-dressed men and women suggested that anything whatever had happened since 1939, or that men, women, and children were starving a few hundred miles away. But the visitor looking across the square could notice that the grass seemed exceptionally long even for an uncut lawn. “I suppose the labor shortage is very severe in Switzerland?” “Yes, but why?” “Oh, just that that lawn there seems to have gone uncut for a long time.” “But that is no lawn, it is a wheat field.” In the very heart of this thriving industrial city, unbelievably prosperous and peaceful, wheat is grown to stretch the short rations. This is no isolated instance; it is a practice common throughout Switzerland to use every square inch of land for food production. The Swiss … [Read more...] about As Switzerland Sees It
The Battle of the Claque
by JOSEPH WECHSBERG 1 THE claque at the Vienna Staatsopor was an exclusive group of forty innocent opera lovers with uncompromising ideas about good music and good singing. Joseph Schostal, the claque chef, a dignified man with black sideburns, high-toned principles, and great authority, who gave us free standing room admissions in the fourth gallery in return for applause, never failed to remind us of the claque’s “classical tradition.” I became a full-fledged member of the illustrious body in the twenties, when I studied music at the Vienna Conservatory. Every once in a while, Schostal called a meeting at his permanent headquarters, the back room of the Peterskeller, a traditionless beer cellar across from the Staatsoper, and over foam crowns of Gösserbräu reminisced about the history of the claque. The founder of the noble institution was the Great Schoentag, who commanded a social position in Kaiser Franz Josef’s Vienna before the turn of the century. Schoentag went out … [Read more...] about The Battle of the Claque
After Loss, Cheney Begins Difficult Mission of Thwarting Trump
JACKSON, Wyo. — Hours after her landslide loss, Representative Liz Cheney wasted no time Wednesday taking her first steps toward what she says is now her singular goal: blocking Donald J. Trump from returning to power. Ms. Cheney announced that her newly rebranded political organization, the Great Task, would be dedicated to mobilizing opposition to Mr. Trump. And in an early morning television interview, she for the first time acknowledged what many have suspected: She is “thinking” about running for president in 2024, she said on NBC’s “Today Show,” and would decide in the “coming months.” Despite the effort to shift quickly from her defeat to her future, Ms. Cheney and her advisers remained vague about precisely how the congresswoman, who lost to a Trump-backed primary challenger by 37 points in Wyoming on Tuesday, planned to build a movement that could thwart a figure with a strong hold on many of his party’s voters and a set of imposing advantages. Allies, advisers and … [Read more...] about After Loss, Cheney Begins Difficult Mission of Thwarting Trump
Poll Shows Tight Race for Control of Congress as Class Divide Widens
With President Biden’s approval rating mired in the 30s and with nearly 80 percent of voters saying the country is heading in the wrong direction , all the ingredients seem to be in place for a Republican sweep in the November midterm elections. But Democrats and Republicans begin the campaign in a surprisingly close race for control of Congress, according to the first New York Times/Siena College survey of the cycle. What is your preference for the outcome of the 2022 congressional elections? Democratic control Dem. control 41% Republican control Rep. control 40% Other Other 19% Overall among registered voters, 41 percent said they preferred Democrats to control Congress compared with 40 percent who preferred Republican control.
