As a big leaguer, Joe Pignatano had a career that was more noteworthy than notable: He played in the last game at Ebbets Field, he homered off three future Hall of Famers and he hit into a triple play with his final swing in the majors. It was out in the bullpen at Shea Stadium, where he tended relief pitchers and tomatoes for the 1969 Miracle Mets, where Pignatano’s legacy really grew. “He was fairly committed to taking care of his tomatoes,” former Mets pitcher Jim McAndrew told The Associated Press. “It was Joe’s thing,” he said. “A lot of love and effort and TLC.” Pignatano, who reached the majors as a catcher with his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers and became a longtime coach, died Monday at 92. The New York Mets said Pignatano died in Naples, Florida, at a nursing home. He had been suffering from dementia. Pignatano had been the last living coach from the 1969 Mets, who made a remarkable run under manager Gil Hodges to reach the World Series and then startled … [Read more...] about Former Brooklyn Dodgers catcher, Mets coach Joe Pignatano dies at 92

Litmus Test for Chennaiyin Against Kerala; Mumbai, RFYC Look for First Win
Goa: A spirited Chennaiyin FC will hope to halt the Kerala Blasters FC juggernaut when the two sides meet in a third-round match of the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) at the Nagoa Ground here on Saturday. In another tie later in the day, Reliance Foundation Young Champs (RFYC) will want to take their fighting performance in the last game to Mumbai City FC as both teams look for their first win in the campaign. Chennaiyin produced a fighting performance against Jamshedpur FC in their last fixture, conceding a last-gasp goal to end the game as it started at 2-2. It was a bitter pill to swallow for a side that responded to Jamshedpur’s challenge, scoring twice from a goal down to take the lead and almost securing their first win before falling at the last hurdle. Whether Chennaiyin have really turned a corner after their underwhelming performance in the first match will be gauged against Kerala who have looked the part so far. S.F. schools could get $70 million per year more if voters back proposal
San Francisco voters may decide this fall whether to set aside $70 million per year to finance new programs in the city school system that backers hope will boost enrollment and improve the quality of public pre-K-12 education. Supervisor Hillary Ronen and five colleagues on the Board of Supervisors are proposing a City Charter amendment that would fund public school initiatives designed to enhance academic achievement or student wellness. Those could include accelerated math and literacy curriculum as well as academic specialists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, after-school programs, athletic or artistic offerings, and more. The 25-year fund would use money from existing state property taxes — voters would not be asked to raise any new public dollars if the charter amendment makes it to the November ballot. The proposal is also an effort to shore up the San Francisco Unified School District after it was battered by the pandemic and a series of controversies that … [Read more...] about S.F. schools could get $70 million per year more if voters back proposal
EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
The Environmental Protection Agency for the first time is proposing a measure that would force four Western states to reduce their harmful emissions because of the impact they’re having on air quality in neighboring states — including Colorado. If approved, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada would be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and industrial manufacturing sites, while California would need to cut emissions from certain industries. National modeling shows those states’ emissions are blowing across the West and into metro Denver, adding to the already bad ground-level ozone pollution. The move would help Colorado because the EPA recently announced plans to downgrade Denver and the northern Front Range to “severe” violators of federal ozone standards, which would mean more stringent emissions limits for industries and higher gas prices for motorists. The EPA unveiled earlier this month its plan to include 26 states in an update of the agency’s … [Read more...] about EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
Couple charged with murder, accused of starvation of twin girls
A mom and her boyfriend have been charged with murder after being accused of abusing and starving her 8-year-old twin daughters, one of whom has died. The couple, Soledad Mendoza and Ruben "Alex" Moreno, both 29, are alleged to have killed little Melanie Mendoza and caused the suffering of her sister at their home in Houston, Texas. Court documents seen by Fox 26 detail a catalog of alleged prolonged abuse of the children, including untreated fractured bones and clinical signs of starvation. When asked what happened to her twin by police, the surviving child allegedly replied: "My mom killed her." Mendoza and Moreno were arrested on Friday, May 20, after a lengthy investigation stemming from Melanie Mendoza's death in hospital on December 21, 2020, according to local news station Fox 26. The twins had both been taken to Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Center with numerous injuries. Despite being 8, each girl weighed less than 30 pounds and still wore diapers. Joe Biden, emboldened by Russia’s failures, gets aggressive toward China
President Joe Biden 's remarks on Monday about the U.S. "commitment" to defend Taiwan militarily if the island is attacked by China appears to represent a more aggressive approach than previous presidents have taken. While Biden said that the U.S. policy of so-called "strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan had not changed, his comments are his strongest warning yet to China that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if it's attacked. Biden may feel emboldened to take a harder line against China following the strategic failures of the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine, where Russian forces could not seize the capital city of Kyiv during the first stage of the war and have subsequently fallen back. The president directly linked the issue of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan to the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Monday as he answered a question about Taiwan's defense. Biden told reporters in Tokyo that China was "already flirting with danger right now by flying so close and all the … [Read more...] about Joe Biden, emboldened by Russia’s failures, gets aggressive toward China
Ukraine May Use Lincoln Project’s Anti-Trump Tactics Against Putin
While tank movements, drone strikes, and conventional warfare have been key aspects of Ukraine's war against a Russian invasion, the online battle against disinformation and propaganda has been a hallmark of what many consider the first war of the digital age. Mike Madrid and Ron Steslow, known stateside as co-founders of the influential Lincoln Project, which they exited before it was hit by allegations and infighting, are among those who see the Ukraine-Russia war as part of a broader struggle between democracy and authoritarian forces. That's why the two men planned an under-the-radar 10-day trip to Ukraine in the beginning of May, aided by a Russian information specialist, to meet with three officials in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky 's administration to discuss the work they've done and how they can be of help. "We believe there needs to be a global coalition of activists engaged in the fight for democracy," Madrid, now back in California, told Newsweek. He … [Read more...] about Ukraine May Use Lincoln Project’s Anti-Trump Tactics Against Putin
