Updated: Once a top trial lawyer in Cincinnati, Ken Lawson was taking 100 pills a day when he hit bottom in 2006.As his admitted addiction to prescription drugs destroyed his law practice and put him, potentially, en route to a prison sentence, “I just wanted to die,” Lawson testified tearfully in U.S. District Court today. “I felt overwhelming guilt.”Now a federal judge in Ohio must decide whether Lawson’s earlier guilty plea in a drug conspiracy case should require him to do time, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer. Lawson testified that he last abused drugs in early 2007, as he was sitting outside a detoxification center about to begin treatment for his addiction. His license to practice law was suspended in 2007.Lawson and his attorney, David Greer, are arguing for probation, contending that he never sold drugs to others and participated in the conspiracy simply to supply his own drug habit. But Judge Sandra Beckwith found today that Lawson was an … [Read more...] about ‘I Just Wanted to Die,’ Former Ohio Legal Eagle Testifies
KENWOOD — On a cool, clear, peaceful Thursday morning, Brad Eastman sat back on one of the many park-bench-sized rocks at his gravel operation. The 101st Airborne veteran tipped back his insignia hat and looked out over the smooth waters of Saline Creek. He was not at peace, however. The old crick in the vet’s back was acting up and he shook his head as he talked about something he sees as a giant pain in his neck.Eastman figures he would be retired now if not for more than $1 million he has been forced to spend due to conflicts with Grand River Dam Authority a few years back and now a man who lodged a citizen’s lawsuit under federal Clean Waters Act guidelines. In March, he lost an appeal on that federal suit in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and could be stuck with a $35,000 fine, close to $400,000 in additional attorney fees for the plaintiff, plus costs to renovate the creek under the direction of the Cherokee Nation — as ordered by a judge.“They … [Read more...] about ‘I just want to save this stream before it’s gone’: Gravel operation on Saline Creek targeted with citizen lawsuit

Trump has also said he is considering tariffs on imports of automobiles, an action the EU hopes to head off.European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters as he sat down with Trump that Europe and the United States needed to work together."We are close partners, allies - not enemies. Gretchen Comcowich, The Washington Post Published 7:41 am PDT, Wednesday, August 22, 2018 The first few times I bounced around the idea of a potluck wedding, I was bemoaned with cries of: "Oh, jeez, that is so tacky." Or: "If people are coming all that way, the least you could do is feed them." I come from a family of financial prudence. My mother has always been good at squirreling money into untouchable corners. My dad's idea of retail therapy is going to Costco. So in my early 20s, I thought that a potluck wedding would have been met with practical parental approval, but even they wrinkled their noses. "If you are worried about it, Gretchen, we will help pay for a wedding when the time comes," they said at the time. Since first coming up with that idea, I have had a lot more experience with weddings. I have worked as a wedding server for more than 50 couples' special days. I have been a member of the wedding party for three friends, and I have had to, for one reason … [Read more...] about I’ve worked so many fancy weddings. For myself, I still just want a potluck.
