In an act of defiance, Joe Logue, a retired Marine, affixed a military gas mask and headphones before beginning his chest-and-arm workout at a New Jersey gym that had gone rogue. It is illegal for health clubs to be open for anything other than private training sessions in New Jersey, one of only seven states where gyms have been deemed to be so high risk for spreading the coronavirus that they remain either fully or partially closed . But the owners of Mr. Logue’s gym, Atilis, about 10 miles southeast of Philadelphia in Bellmawr, have repeatedly flouted the governor’s executive order, filing a lawsuit that sought to overturn the shutdown while staging numerous reopening events that are equal parts civil disobedience rallies and publicity stunts. Mr. Logue was one of the first people to enter the cavernous gym on a recent Saturday morning after owners kicked down plywood that had covered the space where the doors — removed so they could not be padlocked — once stood. … [Read more...] about They’re Desperate to Reopen Their Gyms, No Matter What the Law Says

Turkey Earthquake: At Least 21 Killed As Death Toll Rises
At least 21 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in an earthquake in eastern Turkey . The 6.8 magnitude quake hit the Elazig province, which is around 340 miles east of the capital Ankara, at around 8:55 p.m. local time on Friday. It was followed by more than 270 aftershocks, Reuters reported. Hundreds of residents were left homeless as buildings collapsed in affected towns near the center of the tremor, which was felt in neighbouring Syria, Lebanon and Iran. The quake struck at a depth of 4 miles near the town of Sivrice in Elazig, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said. Turkish health minister Fahrettin Koca said the search for survivors buried in rubble is ongoing and warned the death toll could rise. Rescue workers and security forces have been searching through the debris by hand and giving out tents, beds and blankets, where overnight temperatures had fallen to below freezing. Tanzania’s leader denies COVID. Now countrymen push back
NAIROBI, Kenya — Tanzania’s president says God has eliminated COVID-19 in his country. His own church now begs to differ. From the local Catholic authority warning this week of a new wave of coronavirus infections to government institutions now requiring staffers to take precautions, populist President John Magufuli is being openly questioned as the African continent fights a strong resurgence in cases and deaths. “We are not an island,” the Catholic secretariat of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference said in a widely shared statement this week. It urged followers, which include the president, to pray but also to adopt measures long practiced in the rest of the world, including avoiding public gatherings and close personal contact. The church’s newspaper on Friday stressed in a large front-page headline: “There is corona.” Advertisement Tanzania has tried to be an island since April, when the East African country of 60 million people stopped updating its number of virus … [Read more...] about Tanzania’s leader denies COVID. National Guard called in to assist in aftermath of Ohio train derailment
close Video Ohio train derailment causes massive fire A 50-car Ohio train derailment causes a massive fire early Saturday near East Palestine. (Elizabeth Parker Sherry via Storyful) Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine activated the state's National Guard to respond to the village of East Palestine on Monday, as residents had to evacuate following a train derailment that caused concerns of a possible explosion. The crash involved about 50 train cars. Officials warned people who live nearby to evacuate due to concern that one rail car could potentially explode and send shrapnel flying for a mile in all directions. DeWine's office said in a statement that there was "the potential of a catastrophic tanker failure" following a "drastic temperature change" in that car. The governor's office said the National Guard will be helping state and local authorities with the evacuation effort. It is unknown what the specific car contained, but officials said … [Read more...] about National Guard called in to assist in aftermath of Ohio train derailment
California Approves New Water Restrictions Amid Worsening Drought
Ten months ago, Gov. Gavin Newsom called for Californians to voluntarily cut water consumption by 15 percent. But that goal remains far off — water use has come down less than 4 percent — and the state’s drought has only been getting worse. So state officials on Tuesday adopted emergency regulations aimed at delivering the most drastic statewide cuts to address the drought thus far. The rules require local water agencies to reduce water use by up to 20 percent and prohibit any watering of ornamental lawns at businesses and other commercial properties. Officials earlier this year announced penalties for watering yards after a rainstorm. The latest measures are part of an effort to push water suppliers toward what’s “going to be needed in this new normal,” said Laurel Firestone, a California State Water Resources Control Board member. “We are in this unprecedented drought. We need to act like it,” Firestone said at Tuesday’s board meeting. California’s large reservoirs … [Read more...] about California Approves New Water Restrictions Amid Worsening Drought
Potential for ‘major explosion’ from derailed train, Ohio governor says
Authorities warned Sunday night that a "major explosion" or toxic gas release could happen at the site of a train derailment in northeastern Ohio, ordering anyone within a mile to evacuate or face possible arrest. A "drastic" temperature change on Sunday evening in one of the derailed cars - some of which were carrying hazardous materials when they went off the tracks Friday night - created the potential for an explosion that could cause "deadly shrapnel" to fly up to a mile, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) said in an 8:40 p.m. statement. Teams were working to prevent an explosion at the site in East Palestine, Ohio, DeWine said. He ordered more than 500 people who were reported to have ignored evacuation orders to leave their homes. People who do not evacuate may be arrested, Columbiana County Sheriff Brian McLaughlin said on the agency's Facebook page. "There is a high probability of a toxic gas release and or explosion," McLaughlin said. DeWine said he was sending the Ohio … [Read more...] about Potential for ‘major explosion’ from derailed train, Ohio governor says

Israeli Raid Kills at Least 5 Palestinians in West Bank
Israeli military forces killed at least five Palestinians near the city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank on Monday, during a gunfight that the Israeli Army said began after soldiers sought to arrest gunmen accused of recently attempting an attack at a nearby Israeli settlement. The deaths near Jericho brought the number of Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank since the start of the year to more than 40, most of them during gun battles that broke out during Israeli operations to arrest members of armed Palestinian groups. That toll constitutes the deadliest start to a year for Palestinians in the West Bank in the past decade and a half, drawing comparisons with the violence of the early years of this century, when a Palestinian uprising, known as the second intifada, left roughly 3,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis dead. Seven Israelis have also been killed since the start of the year, all during a mass shooting on Jan. 27 by a Palestinian attacker in East … [Read more...] about Israeli Raid Kills at Least 5 Palestinians in West Bank
