Editor’s note: In this recurring column, San Francisco singer and artist La Doña will celebrate the city’s vibrant Mexican food scene by reviewing a different burrito each month from taquerias across the Bay Area. You can find a Spanish language version of the story here . On Cinco de Mayo, I pulled up to Taqueria La Mejor with two of my lifelong, lesbian, art-culture icons, my tias, Irene Perez and Catalina Govea. It's because of these two that I discovered the gem of La Mejor, my current favorite taqueria in the Bay Area. Located at 3411 High St. in Oakland, La Mejor sits in a tiny strip mall across the street from one of the more hyphy Walgreens of the Bay Area. Doña Maria Pardo has owned the small, all femme-staffed taqueria since 1998. Doña Maria came from Jalisco, and was waiting tables at another taqueria when the original owner of La Mejor offered to sell her the place. She recalled feeling unsure about the commitment, until he teased that he'd offer the small … [Read more...] about Grandma of Warriors’ Juan Toscano-Anderson bought Taqueria La Mejor in 1998. Here’s the timeout altercation between Luka Doncic, Warriors’ Juan Toscano-Anderson and Steph Curry not shown on TNT’s broadcast
Tensions are starting to build between the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks with the Dubs firmly in the driver's seat of the Western Conference Finals following a 109-100 road win Sunday night to go up 3-0 in the series. After Golden State's Steph Curry hit a no-look 3-pointer to give the Warriors a 43-42 second quarter lead, a timeout on the floor led to a commercial break on the TNT broadcast. During the commercial timeout, alternate angles from TNT Overtime — a complimentary feed available on NBA.com with no announcers and a host of alternate camera angles — showed the teams getting into it as the players headed to their respective benches. Things got HEATED after Steph's no-look three pic.twitter.com/1lmcbCFn9c — Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) May 23, 2022 The Mavericks' Luka Doncic and the Warriors' Juan Toscano-Anderson — who had at least one chippy exchange earlier this season — began jawing; Doncic and Curry then turned around and walked … [Read more...] about Here’s the timeout altercation between Luka Doncic, Warriors’ Juan Toscano-Anderson and Steph Curry not shown on TNT’s broadcast
Thomas De Gendt earns stage win as Juan Pedro Lopez retains Giro d’Italia lead
Thomas De Gendt won stage eight of the Giro d’Italia as Guillaume Martin used a breakaway to vault his way up to fourth in the overall standings. De Gendt accelerated past Davide Gabburo and Jorge Arcas with 200 metres to go on the seafront in Napoli to get his reward for splitting up the break and carrying clear a four-man group which also included his Lotto-Soudal team-mate Harm Vanhoucke. Cofidis’ Martin followed the pre-stage favourites Mathieu van der Poel and Biniam Girmay 33 seconds down, three minutes ahead of the chasing peloton to move up from 14th in the general classification to fourth, now 66 seconds behind Trek-Segafredo’s Juan Pedro Lopez who held on to pink going into Sunday’s stage on Blockhaus. This short, punchy 153km stage on a circuit around Napoli was always expected to produce attacking racing, and Van der Poel and Girmay were quick to get themselves in the early breakaway. Stage one winner Van der Poel tried to go solo with 46km still to … [Read more...] about Thomas De Gendt earns stage win as Juan Pedro Lopez retains Giro d’Italia lead

3 arrested in South Bay for allegedly conducting an exorcism that killed 3-year-old
San Jose police have arrested three people accused of performing an exorcism-like ritual that caused the death of a 3-year-old child in a tiny church, police said Friday. Officers responded to the disturbing scene shortly after 8 p.m. on Sept. 24 after a woman — later identified as 25-year-old Claudia Hernandez-Santos — called to report that her daughter had died at a church located behind a house at 1094 S. Second Street, police said. When police and paramedics arrived, they found the girl on the floor, apparently killed by asphyxia from someone smothering her, court documents show. Emergency responders took the girl to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m., according to a statement of facts from San Jose Detective Mike Harrington and Sgt. Juan Vallejo. Hernandez-Santos told investigators she believed her daughter was possessed by a demon after the girl woke up crying and screaming the night before, prompting her and the child’s uncle, … [Read more...] about 3 arrested in South Bay for allegedly conducting an exorcism that killed 3-year-old
French Open preview: Carlos Alcaraz is player to watch
PARIS — For the first time in a year, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are both entered in a major tournament — and, somehow, most of the buzz heading into the French Open is about Carlos Alcaraz, a teenager without one Grand Slam title to his name. There are plenty of reasons to keep tabs on Djokovic and Nadal when play begins Sunday. They’re two greats of the game who have played each other more than any other two men in the Open era, including nine times at Roland Garros. Thanks to Thursday’s draw, they would meet in the quarterfinals this year, if at all, with a possible matchup against Alcaraz awaiting in the semifinals. Nadal is a 13-time champion in Paris, owner of a men’s-record 21 Slam trophies overall and only recently returned from a rib injury. He’s also dealing with chronic pain in his left foot, an issue that kept him out of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year. “All of a sudden,” No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev said Friday after watching Nadal practice on-site, “his … [Read more...] about French Open preview: Carlos Alcaraz is player to watch

Police face questions over response to Texas school shooting
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Law enforcement authorities faced questions and criticism Thursday over how much time elapsed before they stormed a Texas elementary school classroom and put a stop to the rampage by a gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers. Investigators were also unable to say with any certainty whether an armed school district security officer outside Robb Elementary in the town of Uvalde exchanged fire with the attacker, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, when Ramos first arrived on Tuesday. The motive for the massacre — the nation's deadliest school shooting since Newtown, Connecticut, a decade ago — remained under investigation, with authorities saying Ramos had no known criminal or mental health history. During the siege, which ended when a U.S. Border Patrol team burst in and shot the gunman to death, frustrated onlookers urged police officers to … [Read more...] about Police face questions over response to Texas school shooting
