Veterans who have served in conflicts from World War II to Desert Storm rang “America’s Freedom Bell” at a ceremony Sunday to honor the 95 U.S. Congress members who have been in the armed forces.The only name read from San Diego County was U.S. House Representative Duncan Hunter.“God bless America,” said Richard Rovsek, chairman of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, said during Sunday’s event after the audience recited the pledge of allegiance. “God bless the men and women in our armed forces.”The ceremony was organized by the foundation, a Rancho Santa Fe-based nonprofit whose mission is to honor and raise awareness for the armed forces, veterans and first responders. “I can’t think of an effort that’s more important than the men and women in our armed forces,” Rovsek said.The ceremony was held Sunday to coincide with the 89th anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Rovsek said. MORE than one hundred women in the armed forces have been sexually assaulted by comrades, figures reveal. Top brass have launched an inquiry after at least 108 females serving in the Army, Royal Navy and RAF claimed they were attacked. Twenty-nine women said they were raped by people they worked with, 73 reported being physically assaulted and six more suffered other abuse. Twenty-five men were also sexually assaulted — as were another seven victims whose sex was not disclosed. A total of 55 people in the services faced 83 sex charges in court martials last year. Of those 21 were found guilty. Police from all three forces have launched 400 investigations over three years, the figures show. Cases were in the UK, Germany, Cyprus, Canada and the Falklands. Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has launched a probe into the scandal. It will be led by the RAF’s Air Marshal Michael Wigston. According to the data, 5.4 females per 1,000 record deliberate self-harm (DSH) events, compared to 2.9 males. While under-20s are the most likely age group with 12.5 incidents per 1,000, a real-world equivalent of 98 people in 2017-18. The next highest rate was 6.1 for 20 to 24-year-olds, followed by 3.0 for 25-29 year-olds. Untrained service personnel were twice as likely as their trained counterparts to self-harm, with 5.9 incidents per 1,000 compared to three for trained personnel.
