Pride 2022: 10 queer films and TV shows to check out
A month-long celebration of Pride is coming to an end. However, celebrating love in all its forms, and fighting for the right to be oneself in our heteronormative and cis-normative world, is for every season. Pride Month not only serves as a festival of celebration for the queer, but also is a call to action from a longstanding movement that aims to break down social conditioning, gender and sex stereotypes, and to fight for upholding the rights of all. For those who wish to explore the LGBTQIA+ spectrum through mainstream cinema, here are a few recent titles to introduce you to queer romance, rights, representation, and more. Call Me By Your Name Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 gay coming-of-age drama is one of the most famous queer titles, especially among the Gen Z. Set in the stunning Italian countryside, the film tells the story of an Italo-French youth named Elio (Timothée Chalamet), who finds himself in a complicated relationship with Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old … [Read more...] about Pride 2022: 10 queer films and TV shows to check out
GOP compromise on gun rights aren’t winning votes or solving problems | Opinion
Senate Republicans seem to think they are defusing a potential problem by playing along with anti-gun activists and agreeing to a legislative "compromise" on guns. They assume reaching a deal would dampen criticism of their support for gun rights and do them some good at the polls. They are mistaken. A new gun control bill would be just another instance of GOP moderates being enticed by their liberal opponents into doing something that will undermine support from the conservative base they need if they're going to take back control of Congress this fall. The impetus for the bill —which was passed by the Senate on Tuesday with the votes of 14 Republicans—was the news of mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas. The outrage and frustration over the frequency of these atrocities created an opening for Democrats to return to their demands for more gun control legislation. Restricting the right to own a gun wouldn't have prevented any or all of the mass shootings. In a … [Read more...] about GOP compromise on gun rights aren’t winning votes or solving problems | Opinion
Making waves for Malaysia
CONSISTENTLY spending up to five hours a day in training sessions has produced positive outcomes for national swimmer Steve Khiew Hoe Yean. Save for Sunday, his days are filled with morning and afternoon training sessions in the pool – a routine that has propelled him to the top of the national crop, with him holding the 400m and 800m freestyle, as well as the 200m backstroke, national records. He set the new national record in the 400m freestyle on June 19 at the World Aquatics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. At the South-East Asian (SEA) Games held in Hanoi, Vietnam, last May, the 20-year-old stood out with his performance in several events – clinching gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 200m backstroke, 400m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay, and bronze in the 800m freestyle. For Khiew, his successful campaign at the SEA Games is a pay-off for the hours he had spent on training. “I won two bronze medals at my first SEA Games in 2019. I achieved my … [Read more...] about Making waves for Malaysia
Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week
Loewe thrust Paris Fashion Week into a bleak and dystopian vision of the future on Saturday -- turning its runway into a dead space where nature and animal life only existed to be harnessed and exploited by humankind. A sanitized white wall descended onto a bare deck as models walked by robotically, bathed in misty white light. Here are some highlights of spring-summer 2023 menswear collections: LOEWE'S NATURE MORTE Models wore plates of television screens showing deep water fish in the ocean, and plasma screen visors beamed out growing chrysanthemums. The only place that grass grew in designer Jonathan Anderson’s fashion dystopia was literally out of shoes, where green blades quivered and flapped surreally as the automatons filed by. The British designer used the remarkable set and concept not only as a springboard for some of the most accomplished designs seen this season, but to make a thoughtful comment about ecology and humanity’s contempt for the natural … [Read more...] about Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week
There’s a new way to help college students transfer: Admit them to two schools at once
This story about college transfer students was produced by The Hechinger Report , a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education. Amoni Hall will move this summer from one higher education institution to another, a process that can be disruptive, complex, frustrating and fruitless when credits don’t transfer and other unanticipated obstacles crop up. But Hall, 20, will barely even notice the change. She’s among a small number of students at community colleges who have been guaranteed seats at partner four-year universities, with the idea that they’ll go on to earn the bachelor’s degrees to which the vast majority of students like Hall say they aspire. Guaranteed and dual admissions — under which students are accepted to both two- and four-year programs at the same time — are designed to smooth their paths. They usually include additional advising that many need to help them make the leap. This simple but … [Read more...] about There’s a new way to help college students transfer: Admit them to two schools at once
Donald Trump’s first openly gay judicial nominee was just approved by the Senate. Here’s why LGBT groups aren’t thrilled
Last week, the Senate approved the nomination of Mary Rowland to the District Court for the Northern District f Illinois, the first LGBT judicial nominee from Donald Trump to be confirmed by the Senate. Trump initially announced his intent to nominate Rowland, 57, back in June 2018. But the vote on her appointment stalled, along with several others, even though she sailed through her Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and got a "well qualified" rating from the American Bar Association. She was unanimously approved by a voice vote on July 31 and now awaits her judicial commission. A magistrate judge since 2012, Rowland was previously a partner in a Chicago law firm and spent a decade working in the federal public defender's office. She earned her bachelor's from the University of Michigan, her law degree from the University of Chicago and clerked for U.S. District Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. She's a member of the Gay and Lesbian Bar Association and has done pro bono for Lambda … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s first openly gay judicial nominee was just approved by the Senate. EU Confirms Funding for Migrants in Balkans, Bosnia Warns of ‘Militant Behaviour’
As the EU confirmed it was spending taxpayers’ cash on migrants seeking to break into the bloc, Bosnians have pleaded for the Balkans migration route to be shut down amidst increasing “militancy” from newcomers. Authorities in border towns in Bosnia, which is outside the European Union, have been struggling to cope with increasingly bold and forceful attempts to push through police lines and onto EU soil since mid-October, when thousands of third world immigrants began camping near the border with EU member Croatia — reportedly following misinformation that Croatia was set to open its frontiers. In the border town of Bihac, Mayor Suhret Fazlic said the 3,000 or so migrants currently living in the area nearby were presenting a major problem for the city with “militant behaviour” and committing hundreds of criminal offences. “First of all, it is necessary to immediately stop the arrival of new migrants,” he told Euronews this week, adding that he believes that residents of … [Read more...] about EU Confirms Funding for Migrants in Balkans, Bosnia Warns of ‘Militant Behaviour’
Tears of joy and rage as the constitutional right to abortion ends
The day that carved a line between the past and the future turned out to be a summer Friday in June, a day long awaited by some and much feared by others, the day that marked the end of nearly 50 years of a constitutional right to abortion in the United States. For abortion opponents, the Supreme Court's decision Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that legalized abortion in 1973, was met with celebration. There were tears of joy, grateful prayers, holidays from work. For supporters of abortion rights, there was grief and rage and grim determination. By evening, demonstrations had erupted in cities across the country, with protesters vowing to fight for access to abortions just as prior generations of women once did. Whatever their views on abortion, it was a moment of profound transformation for millions of Americans. In at least 13 states, abortion will be banned in nearly all cases within days. Meanwhile, leaders of other states pledged to protect it. … [Read more...] about Tears of joy and rage as the constitutional right to abortion ends
