The Crest and Trough of a Wave
The BJP’s performance in the Maharashtra Assembly elections was nothing short of spectacular. To go from 46 seats and 14 per cent vote share to 122 seats and 28 per cent vote share in the span of one election is incredible. This achievement is particularly notable in light of the fact that the BJP has been in a pre-poll alliance with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra for the last 25 years. What does it mean to go it alone in a state where you have had a partner for 25 years? Let’s look first at the 2009 and 2014 Assembly elections only, because the delimitation of constituencies that took place in 2008 makes analysis prior to 2009 a bit complicated. >Pratap Vardhan , a data scientist at >Gramener , did the number-crunching on this one. The Maharashtra Assembly has 288 seats. This time around, the BJP contested 111 of the 119 seats it had contested in 2009, the rest going to its allies. It won 82 of them, with a voteshare of a whopping 47.55 per cent in these 111 seats, … [Read more...] about The Crest and Trough of a Wave

New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe
Shiv Sena | The Maratha tiger in its labyrinth
In the fall of 2012, an ailing Bal Thackeray, founder and patriarch of Maharashtra’s then dominant right-wing party — the Shiv Sena (Army of Shivaji) — had appealed to his Shiv Sainiks to stand by his son Uddhav and grandson Aaditya Thackeray. In what would be his final address to his party workers, Bal Thackeray, in his pre-recorded speech at the party’s annual Dussehra rally in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, called upon the Marathi manoos (Marathi-speaking sons-of-the soil) to remain united and smash the Congress. The speech, three weeks before the 86-year-old Thackeray’s death in November that year, also had an implied appeal to his estranged nephew, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, to join forces with the Shiv Sena. A decade later, while the prospects of the Sena and the MNS uniting have completely evaporated, a bleaker question facing Mr. Uddhav and his son today is whether ordinary Sainiks will stand by them after the recent rebellion of 40 MLAs led by Eknath … [Read more...] about Shiv Sena | The Maratha tiger in its labyrinth
The economics of cow slaughter
There is no cause to believe that the >decisive defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s communal and caste politics in Bihar will mean an end to its vicious campaign against cow slaughter. The online threat from a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) official’s twitter handle to retailers to stop selling goods made of cow hide is clear evidence. Although the general campaign against cow slaughter targets Muslims, it is Hindus who will be most adversely affected if the Hindutva brigade has its way with a total ban on cattle slaughter. Brinda Karat Industry choked Along with farmers, the entire chain of the leather industry will be affected with a drastic fall in supply of raw material. According to the Council for Leather Exports, 2.5 million people, the majority of them scheduled castes, are employed in the industry. An estimated eight lakh Dalits earn a living through flaying the skin of dead cattle. This activity is within the law. But with the vigilante actions … [Read more...] about The economics of cow slaughter
Urban voters, Muslim voters – Lok Sabha mysteries solved
How many urban constituencies does India really have? How many Muslim-dominated constituencies do we have? These are key questions around our elections that we have simply not been able to answer – until now. [A brief aside on a frustrating data issue, before I get to the meat of the matter. Feel free to scroll down to the charts if this does not interest you.] Most demographic data for India comes from the Census, which splits its data down from the state and district level to the block, village and town level. The smallest unit of Census data is an Enumeration Block (EB) which consists of around 150 households. Electoral data, on the other hand, comes from the Election Commission of India (ECI), and is centred around parliamentary and assembly constituencies, the smallest unit of which is a polling booth which covers around 1,000 voters. The problem is that the ‘twain don’t meet. Theoretically, if the ECI simply listed all the Census EBs in an assembly or parliamentary … [Read more...] about Urban voters, Muslim voters – Lok Sabha mysteries solved
