ONE of the earliest ever depictions of the face of Christ to be found in the Holy Land have been discovered by archaeologists. Art historian Emma Maayan-Fanar discovered the over 1,500-year-old image of Jesus in a ruined church in Shivta, an archaeological site in Israel's Negev Desert. She said: "It was really a matter of luck - and experience.” "We studied the site, and I was looking closely at the apse expecting to see some spots of colour. Then, I lifted my head and saw the eyes. "Dror Maayan - my husband and a professional photographer - pointed his camera in the direction I thought I saw the image, and there he was, the face of Jesus." Though the Holy Land gave rise to the Christian faith, precious little devotional art has survived there from the religion's early history.
