Legislation to permit doctors in New Jersey to authorize medical marijuana for any diagnosed condition took a step forward on Thursday. Medical marijuana, for now, can only be prescribed for certain debilitating conditions. The bill would also make it easier for minor patients to get edible forms of medical marijuana.RELATED: Are there risks from secondhand marijuana smoke? Early science says yesThe measure was approved by the state Assembly health committee, with Democrats in support and Republicans in opposition. Three Democratic members didn’t vote and two Republicans abstained. “There is no benefit in denying a patient relief,” Democratic Assemblyman Herb Conaway of Burlington County, the chairman of the committee, said in a statement. “Medical marijuana has the potential to treat many medical conditions. If a doctor believes medical marijuana can be an effective treatment, then they should be able to prescribe it to their patients.” Prior to the … [Read more...] about New Jersey bill advances to expand medical marijuana program for any diagnosed condition
ASBURY PARK — Democrat Phil Murphy defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno on Tuesday in the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Chris Christie, who failed as a presidential candidate and has seen his popularity ratings plummet.Murphy emerged victorious after leading Guadagno in the polls and in fundraising in a race that revolved in part around the Republican governor's unpopularity.Murphy relentlessly linked Guadagno to Christie, whose approval ratings are abysmal, even shooting one television ad with the George Washington Bridge as a backdrop, a reference to a 2013 political payback scandal that deliberately caused traffic jams and resulted in three convictions against Christie's former appointees and aides.Murphy, a 60-year-old former Goldman Sachs executive who served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to Germany but has never held office before, has promised to raise income taxes on millionaires, increase funding for public schools and pensions and legalize … [Read more...] about Democrat Murphy ‘honored’ to win New Jersey governor’s race

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was in Philadelphia Wednesday to talk about energy. For whatever reason, the politician who hails from the land of the Dallas Cowboys received a custom Eagles jersey for his troubles. Get a load of this: Look, this has nothing to do with the fact that Cruz is a Republican. Plenty of local GOPers celebrated the Eagles' Super Bowl victory, which is a good thing. It's something we can enjoy together regardless of political leanings. But Ted Cruz? Cruz is one of those politicians with two football teams in his state, so he pulls the whole "I like them both!" shtick. Which I sort of get when you hold statewide office; Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf does the same thing, for example. But again, Cruz is from Texas. Maybe he doesn't care about sports, and that's fine. Maybe Bob Casey and Pat Toomey don't really care either, but neither is dumb enough to be caught holding up a Cowboys jersey. You may be thinking about Chris Christie, the now former governor of New Jersey who was … [Read more...] about Ted Cruz got a custom Eagles jersey for some reason
