His appraisal: “I don’t know if I’m an optimist. I’m a realist.” BySomini Sengupta Sept. 18, 2018 Want climate news in your inbox? Sign up here for Climate Fwd: , our email newsletter. SAN FRANCISCO — It was a big act, one of the last in the final days of a long political career, and it was about one of his life’s passions: safeguarding the environment. Jerry Brown, 80, the four-term governor of California who is to retire in January, was the principal organizer and reluctant star of the Global Climate Action Summit, a high-octane gathering of lawmakers, executives and scientists working to beat back global warming. But even as he sought to rally other … [Read more...] about Jerry Brown Made Climate Change His Issue. The Result: Attacks From All Sides.
By Dan Walters, CALmatters | PUBLISHED: September 16, 2018 at 12:01 am | UPDATED: September 16, 2018 at 12:02 am Jerry Brown publicly denies harboring thoughts of the legacy of his record 16 years as California’s governor. When a reporter asked Brown about it in January, Brown replied, with a characteristic smirk, “Can you tell me the legacy of Goodwin Knight? Or Gov. (Frank) Merriam. Or (George) Deukmejian? Governors don’t have legacies. That’s my No. 1 proposition.” Brown pointedly excluded his father, Pat Brown, from his list of legacy-bereft predecessors. And it’s quite obvious that Brown yearns to match his father by being remembered as the governor who made California — at least in his mind — a global leader in fighting climate change through reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Just before hosting a global climate-change conference in San Francisco last week, Brown signed a bill decreeing that California’s electrical … [Read more...] about Walters: What cost to state for Gov. By George Skelton | Los Angeles Times PUBLISHED: September 14, 2018 at 6:15 am | UPDATED: September 14, 2018 at 6:30 am Gov. Jerry Brown is unquestionably one of America’s most outspoken climate warriors. Yet in his own state, activists protest that he’s an overrated slacker. That’s quintessential left-coast California. Even though the governor is outspoken, his critics say, it doesn’t mean he isn’t a softie on some polluting industries, especially oil. But Brown should be grateful: At least he’s being picketed at his Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco by people on his side. They’re not climate deniers like President Trump, who contends that human-caused global warming is a hoax. They’re just pushing him to be tougher and match his rhetoric with deeds, the protesters say. And they’re a bit nasty about it. “Jerry Brown has positioned himself as a climate leader, warning of ‘extinction’ and … [Read more...] about Skelton: Does Jerry Brown deserve title of ultimate climate crusader?
POLITICS 09/13/2018 08:43 pm ET The president's moves to dismantle environmental protections are a "major assault" on Americans, California's governor said at a climate summit Thursday. By Mary Papenfuss California Gov. Jerry Brown bashed President Donald Trump’s record on the environment Thursday, saying that Trump will be remembered on climate change as a “liar, criminal, fool — pick your choice.” The Democrat spoke out against the president in introductory remarks at the Global Climate Action Summit that he’s co-hosting in San Francisco. Brown also ripped Trump for taking steps to try to dismantle California’s vehicle emissions standards, rolling back federal controls on power plant pollution, and easing regulations on methane emissions from oil and gas operations. “When Trump says, in effect, ‘We like more methane going into the air,’ that is highly destructive, very highly … [Read more...] about Jerry Brown Calls Trump A ‘Liar, Criminal, Fool’ On Climate Change
