Prince Andrew’s former sex accuser Virginia Giuffre told a court that a French model agency boss she was introduced to by Jeffrey Epstein raped her at least 50 times. Her claim has emerged as an investigation into the death in February this year of Jean-Luc Brunel in a Paris jail tries to disprove conspiracy theories that he was murdered. Ms Giuffre, 38, told French magistrates in November 2020 that Brunel had committed “no less than 50 non-consensual sex acts”, according to evidence outlined in the French newspaper Le Parisien yesterday. She told of one alleged attack in St Tropez in May 2001 after model Naomi Campbell’s 31st birthday party. Virginia Giuffre gave evidence ( Image: REUTERS) Recalling how Brunel would often rape her at the time, when she was aged 17, Ms Giuffre told the hearing: “The attacks did not stop on the pretext that we were on vacation. After the party, I think I had had a few glasses of champagne and it got sexual.” However, visa details … [Read more...] about Prince Andrew accuser says Jeffrey Epstein’s modelling agent pal raped her 50 times

Ringgit appreciates versus US dollar, tracking positive yuan sentiment
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit appreciated against the US dollar at closing today, tracking the improved sentiment for the Chinese yuan following positive developments in Shanghai, amid concerns over recession in the United States (US). At 6 pm, the local currency was traded at 4.3880/3915 versus the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.3980/3995. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said, as Shanghai records 'zero-COVID' cases across its districts, the city is expected to gradually open up, hence, boosting the ringgit and other regional Chinese foreign exchange proxies. "If China can orchestrate a healthy reopening, the worst could be behind the ringgit,” Innes told Bernama. The ringgit is positively correlated to the Chinese yuan as China remains Malaysia's most important trading partner. Meanwhile, OANDA Asia Pacific senior market analyst Jeffrey Halley said the concerns over recession talks in the US could likely lead to a decent correction in the US dollar. … [Read more...] about Ringgit appreciates versus US dollar, tracking positive yuan sentiment
What is the government doing about the Northern Ireland Protocol? The answer seems to be nothing anytime soon
The foreign secretary has said the situation in Northern Ireland is "very grave and serious". According to Liz Truss , post- Brexit rules are "onerous", leaving some supermarket shelves empty; many businesses in Northern Ireland have been hit - while others have "stopped trading altogether." So what is Boris Johnson's government doing about it? For all the ramping up of the rhetoric in the last week, the answer seems to be nothing anytime soon. Article 16 - the mechanism that would allow rapid unilateral action to overrule the Treaty the UK agreed to in 2019 - is off the table for now. There was no mention in last week's Queen's Speech of legislation allowing Britain to act without agreement. Advertisement Today is merely the announcement of future legislation "in the coming weeks", but we have not yet seen a draft - and Liz Truss only gave a hint of the provisions it will contain. That legislation, once published, will take perhaps nine … [Read more...] about What is the government doing about the Northern Ireland Protocol? The answer seems to be nothing anytime soon

Brexit: EU signals trade war as Boris Johnson plans to rip up Northern Ireland Protocol
Brussels has signalled it could trigger a trade war with the UK if the Government proceeds with its plans to unilaterally override parts of the post-Brexit trade deal for Northern Ireland. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss confirmed she will publish a law in the coming weeks to change border rules - without seeking the EU’s permission. Ms Truss said the UK still remains “open to a negotiated solution” with Brussels and is willing to hold further talks “but the urgency of the situation means we can't afford to delay any longer”. Ms Truss insisted: "We are very clear that this is legal in international law and we will be setting out our legal position in due course". But the EU has warned such a move would break international law - while senior Tory Simon Hoare, chair of the Northern Ireland affairs committee, said it was "extraordinary" that the government needed to be reminded of its commitment to rule of law. Maros Sefcovic, the Vice President of the European Commission, … [Read more...] about Brexit: EU signals trade war as Boris Johnson plans to rip up Northern Ireland Protocol
