‘Out-of-control Japanese knotweed growing towards our homes like Day of the Triffids’
Residents say they’re living in a scene from a horror movie after Japanese knotweed encompassed a park and started to spread towards their homes. The fast-growing plant has taken over Brickfields Park, which is part of Worcester's King George V Playing Fields, with locals describing it as something out of "Day of the Triffids". Locals claimed the issue has been ignored by the council and left unresolved, with many worried the weed will soon invade their homes, knocking thousands of pounds off the value of their properties . Dennis Hodson, a retired gardener who lives in a £200,000 bungalow in Tunnel Hill which backs onto the fields, said the weed was out of control. Residents have said the 'eyesore' weed has is taking over their community and described it as something out of 'Day of the Triffids' ( Image: SWNS) He said: “The knotweed has gone rampant in the park and it’s coming up in our gardens now, including mine which is just 20 metres away. ‘Bullet Train’ actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Andrew Koji say Japanese characters are ‘heart’ of film
Actor Andrew Koji, who is half Japanese and was born and raised in England, said he’s always felt out of place. But in the new action-comedy film “Bullet Train,” Koji plays a Japanese character, and in the process, he found a new appreciation for his heritage. “This film, and the last couple years, made me really look into [my roots] and find pride in it, and for that half of my culture,” Koji said. “Bullet Train,” which is in theaters Friday, is adapted from the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kōtarō Isaka. It is set in Japan and takes place entirely on a bullet train. There are seven assassins on board, all working a job — so there’s plenty of fights, blood and quippy one-liners (one character likes to quote Thomas the Tank Engine , a detail that was in the original novel). In the film, Koji plays Kimura, a hired hand and an alcoholic, whose son is pushed off of a roof. Kimura’s father, the Elder (played by Japanese action star Hiroyuki Sanada), is disappointed in him … [Read more...] about ‘Bullet Train’ actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Andrew Koji say Japanese characters are ‘heart’ of film
Contrasting memories of Japanese colonisation in Korea and Taiwan
Taiwan and Korea were colonised by Imperial Japan for much of the first half of the 20th century, and liberated only after Japan surrendered to allied forces in 1945. While North and South Korea continue to share a deep resentment towards Japan, Taiwan exhibits a more positive attitude towards their former coloniser. Why is there such a stark difference in attitude towards Japan, and what present-day political ends do the differing narratives serve? Korea historian Prof Kyung Moon Hwang and Asia historian Dr Lewis Mayo examine the ongoing legacy of Japanese colonization. Presented by Jane Hutcheon. A podcast from Asia Institute of the University of Melbourne. Produced and edited by profactual.com. Report: Japanese Yakuza Criminal Gang to Disband After 100 Years
An organized crime syndicate called the Anegasaki-kai has recently disbanded after operating within Tokyo’s old downtown district since about 1912, investigative sources told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper Friday. The Anegasaki-kai notified other yakuza , or Japanese organized crime groups, in Tokyo that it had chosen to disband on July 25, the newspaper’s sources said. “Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department said it learned that the notice was sent to the Kyokuto-kai, a designated crime syndicate, and other gangs, and is now trying to verify it,” according to the Asahi Shimbun . “We need to make sure if it actually disbanded,” an officer in charge of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s anti-gang measures told the newspaper on August 12. “We will closely monitor developments.” The Anegasaki-kai was founded sometime during Japan’s early Taisho Era (1912-1926), which is named after the ruling period of Japanese Emperor Taisho. Korea Protests Japanese PM’s Offering to War Shrine
August 16, 2022 13:11 Korea on Monday protested against Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida sending a ritual offering to the controversial Yasukini Shrine, where war criminals are honored among the country's fallen. Japan marked its defeat in World War II on Monday, the anniversary of Emperor Hirohito's surrender speech in 1945. Other Cabinet ministers visited the shrine, which has become a symbol for resurgent chauvinism in the island country and honors among others wartime fascist dictator Hideki Tojo. According to Kyodo News, Kishida only sent the ritual offering to the shrine in his capacity as the chief of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. But Economic Security Minister Sanae Taikachi and Reconstruction Minister Kenya Akiba visited the shrine in person, while Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura went last Saturday. Kishida instead attended a ceremony remembering the war dead in Tokyo, where he paid tribute to some 3 million Japanese … [Read more...] about Korea Protests Japanese PM’s Offering to War Shrine
Spenger’s is closed, but its artifacts live on through fame, memories and auction
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Alicia Spenger is currently coordinating a cache of memorabilia accumulated at her family’s bygone 128-year-old Berkeley restaurant, Spenger’s Fish Grotto, for public auction. In doing so, Alicia, the great-granddaughter of the restaurant founder Frank Spenger Sr., has not only stumbled across dozens of Spenger family mementos and quirky restaurant tales, but also prized artifacts. Earlier this week, news broke that one of those dining room decorations — a large vase — is in fact a famous Japanese art piece produced for the 1893 World’s Fair and long thought to have been lost or destroyed. Even though Frank Sr. gave it to his wife once upon a time, the family never realized the vase’s unique history. Spenger’s was Berkeley’s oldest restaurant before closing in October. It was first the home of Bavarian immigrant and fisherman Johann Spenger. In the 1890s, he began selling clams … [Read more...] about Spenger’s is closed, but its artifacts live on through fame, memories and auction
