The octopus is an extraordinary creature – and not only because of its eight limbs, three hearts, blue blood, ink squirting, camouflage capacity and the tragic fact that it dies after mating. A study by researchers in Brazil published on Thursday shows that this animal, already considered perhaps the smartest invertebrate, experiences two major alternating sleep states eerily similar to those in humans – and it even might dream. The findings, the researchers said, provide fresh evidence that the octopus possesses a complex and sophisticated neurobiology that underlies an equally sophisticated behavioral repertoire, while also offering broader insight into the evolution of sleep, a crucial biological function. Octopuses previously were known to experience sleep and change colors while slumbering. In the new study, the researchers observed a species called Octopus insularis in a laboratory setting. They found that these color changes are associated with two distinct sleep states: … [Read more...] about Octopuses Change Colours While Slumbering, Have 2 Sleep Cycles Eerily Similar to Humans, Finds Study

Dramatic moment hundreds of sharks seen in feeding frenzy off dead whale carcass
Fishermen captured a wild feeding frenzy as dozens of hungry sharks feasted on the carcass of a dead whale . The mesmerising moment was recorded off the coast of a tourist hotspot in Western Australia. Travellers John Cloke and Indy Crimmins were spending some time at Norman's Bay when they noticed some sudden splashing out at sea. While the pair were camping at Betty's Beach, northwest of Albany, they quickly set up a drone to find out what was going on in the crystal clear waters. What they saw left the friends stunned as they filmed the mass of sharks ripping into the dead 15-metre humpback whale. The sharks swarmed the whale carcass and ripped it to pieces ( Image: jindys_travels /Instagram) They uploaded the incredible clip to Instagram on Monday. In the caption on the post, which now has more than 900 likes, @jindys_travels told his followers about the experience. To father with love
“My father wanted me to be a curator of an art gallery. This show is my small tribute to him,” says Anupriya Bharath, daughter of renowned photojournalist and artist Bharath Bhushan, who passed away due to cancer in January this year. An exhibition and sale of 135 of his acrylic works is currently on at the foyer of Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad Simple strokes and vibrant colours on canvas depict various Telangana-centric themes including its people, the State festivals of Bonalu and Bathukamma, birds, animals, gods and portraits. Bharath, whose photographs also highlighted Telangana’s art, culture and people, began to paint around a decade ago. “He probably created around 10,000 works in the last 10 years,” says Anupriya, a management professional working with Accenture. ‘Ganesha’ by Bharath Bhushan | Photo Credit: Special arrangement Even while living with multiple health issues, Bharath’s source of comfort was his art and photography. “His day used to begin at 4 am and … [Read more...] about To father with love

Malaysian-born, US-based aviation engineer’s paper plane breaks Guinness World Record
Most of us folded paper aeroplanes for fun when we were kids, but it has always been Julian Chee Yie Jian's childhood dream to design such planes and break records. And recently, he did just that. Currently based in Kansas, the United States, Chee, 24, has put Malaysia on the world map by earning a Guinness World Record (GWR) in the "Farthest flight by a paper aircraft” category. His paper plane design flew 77.134m, beating the previous record of 69.14m held by Americans John Collins and Joe Ayoob in 2012. “It feels long overdue to put Malaysia in the GWR. It’s no moonshot but I represent Malaysia to the best of my ability. It’s definitely not going to be my last,” said Chee in an email interview recently. Asked if he had ever expected to break the GWR, he said: “Yes, I did. Back in 2019, I tested my design in an airplane hangar and I hit approximately 90% of the 2012 record distance on the first day alone. So I knew it was within reach with a bit more refinement.” Chee, a … [Read more...] about Malaysian-born, US-based aviation engineer’s paper plane breaks Guinness World Record
How Lake Tahoe became the site of the epic climax of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Sign up for our Remote Control newsletter to receive our best entertainment stories in your inbox every week. Thousands of visitors fly into Lake Tahoe every year, but very few arrive in a F/A-18E Super Hornet. That was Tom Cruise’s ride in “Top Gun: Maverick,” the blockbuster sequel to the 1986 classic directed by Tony Scott , which shot much of its climax sequence in the South Lake Tahoe area. Filming took place nearly four years ago in December 2018 , with pandemic-related delays repeatedly pushing back the movie’s release until May 27. The movie used military bases all over the west coast, including North Island in San Diego, Lemoore in Fresno and Kings counties, China Lake in Ridgecrest, and Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada, where the real life top gun aviation school is located. Each of those locations offered unique qualities, but none were quite right for the film’s climax. To find the perfect site, location manager Mike Fantasia — who also worked on … [Read more...] about How Lake Tahoe became the site of the epic climax of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
