Jessica Alves looks unrecognisable after facelift, head reduction and voice operation

May 27, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Jessica Alves - formerly dubbed the Human Ken Doll - looks totally unrecognisable after undergoing a huge surgery transformation. The 38-year-old has splurged a staggering £800,000 on 78 surgeries over the years to transform her appearance. But now, Celebrity Big Brother 2018 star Jessica has taken it to the next level by flying to Thailand for a full facelift, head reduction surgery and a voice pitch change. She has previously spoken about her insecurity she has with her voice as a trans woman, explaining that her "androgynous" tone often left people confused. Jessica is set to spend the rest of the month in Thailand to recover from the dramatic surgery and is also having voice therapy to help adjust her speech. Jessica Alves looked unrecognisable after surgery ( Image: BACKGRID) She has to stay in Thailand for a month to recover ( Image: BACKGRID) Just before having the operation earlier this month, the star filmed herself in bed, captioning the … [Read more...] about Jessica Alves looks unrecognisable after facelift, head reduction and voice operation

We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it

May 27, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Since the last annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the course of history has changed dramatically. Russia invaded Ukraine, shaking the European Union, which was established to prevent war from returning to the continent, to its very core. Even when the fighting stops, as it eventually must, the situation will never revert to the status quo ante . Indeed, the Russian invasion may turn out to be the beginning of World War III, and our civilisation may not survive it. The invasion of Ukraine did not come out of the blue. The world has been increasingly engaged over the past half-decade, or longer, in a struggle between two diametrically opposed systems of governance: open society and closed society. Let me define the differences as simply as I can. In an open society, the role of the state is to protect the freedom of the individual; in a closed society, the role of the individual is to serve the rulers of the state. Other issues that concern all humanity – … [Read more...] about We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it

The gilets jaunes in France give us a very important lesson about Brexit

March 16, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The hi-vis vest was once the “must-have accessory” for politicians in the UK. You’ll have seen them. An aspiring cabinet secretary, on your local TV news. They were probably visiting a construction site, surrounded by cameras and an entourage. They are there, they say, to connect with ordinary people. Well, as is so often the case, the French had their own take on the place of the yellow vest in politics – and theirs involved a lot more passion and a rebellious twist (before being hijacked by more sinister and unsavoury forces). Now, as the gridlock at Westminster grinds politics to a halt, it is perhaps to France our politicians should look for lessons on how to get out of this mess. It began with a campaign on the petition platform Change.org . What followed was truly extraordinary. Some 1.2 million people added their names. And they organised, so much so that not only did president Macron scrap tax rises and announce new reductions in taxation for … [Read more...] about The gilets jaunes in France give us a very important lesson about Brexit

The Strasbourg attack is a brutal reminder of how terrorism has changed

December 13, 2018 by www.independent.co.uk

The attack at the Strasbourg Christmas market has highlighted the changing face of radicalised violence in Europe. Early on Tuesday morning , a man wanted on a charge of attempted murder following a botched armed robbery, succeeded in evading French police after they raided his flat. Later that evening he launched a rampage attack on the Christmas market, armed with an automatic pistol and knife. Three people were killed, one left brain dead and 12 others wounded, some with life-threatening injuries. Last night the suspect, Cherif Chekatt, was killed in the Neudorf district of Strasbourg following what police described as a counter terror operation. Chekatt was on France’s S-list of potential security threats. He has 27 previous convictions, served two prison sentences in France, and most recently was released from prison in Germany after serving time for burglary. It has become a familiar picture. In the years following the attacks of 11 September, 2001, it was … [Read more...] about The Strasbourg attack is a brutal reminder of how terrorism has changed

The UK yellow vests have nothing to do with their French counterparts – but they could be just as influential

January 10, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The tools of radical political change are still dominated by French exports. Enlightenment philosophers from Descartes to Voltaire forged ideas that continue to drive the evolution of western liberal democracies. To such intellectual brilliance, we can add numerous far less idealistic Paris creations. They include terrorism itself – a term that originated in the city during la Terreur , when a committee of public safety was executing enemies of the state during the French Revolution. All of these developments – both good and evil – spread quickly around the world, causing mass upheaval and subsequent reorganisation. Now it is the turn of made in France gilets jaunes realpolitik to try its luck as a catalyst on the international stage. The ramshackle movement, which started out protesting against fuel price rises in provincial filling stations, is spawning tribute acts across Europe, and as far away as the Middle East, South America and the United States. The … [Read more...] about The UK yellow vests have nothing to do with their French counterparts – but they could be just as influential

The success of yellow vest protesters in France hinges on their whiteness – and this is why

January 20, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The Clash’s song “White Riot” would be a fitting musical accompaniment to the on-going yellow vests insurrection against French president Emmanuel Macron’s government. During weeks of disturbances, there has barely been a brown or black face in sight. This absence is particularly notable in major cities such as Paris, where vast suburban communities habitually blamed for all social ills have shown next to no interest in joining. Everybody, from the casseurs – a French word for those who go out to destroy property – to thugs fighting the police, has been overwhelmingly fair-skinned. Typically, reactionary commentators and other bigots who like to dwell on a mythical “enemy within” are very disappointed by this. When the Arc de Triomphe itself was ransacked by a mob just before Christmas, there was an outcry, especially when a statue of Marianne – the female personification of the French Republic – had her marble face smashed in. Neo-nazis obsessed with the Third … [Read more...] about The success of yellow vest protesters in France hinges on their whiteness – and this is why

Gilets jaunes infighting shows the movement is brutally disunited – but Macron is still no match for them

February 11, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

Those of us who observed France’s gilets jaunes (yellow vests) on their 13th Saturday in a row of Paris street demonstrations last weekend witnessed incidents that were as surreal as they were horrific. One of the protesters lost four fingers in an explosion caused by police munitions outside France’s National Assembly. It happened as armed officers battled to prevent a full-blown assault on the country’s parliament. Later on, an anti-terrorist patrol vehicle was set alight at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. As orange flames leapt skywards, vast clouds of thick black smoke swirled around a structure normally viewed as an indestructible symbol of the city of love and light. Is Paris burning? – like the title of the classic war film featuring Kirk Douglas, Alain Delon and Orson Welles – became a pertinent question, but this was by no means the most visually shocking scene of the day. That came in Lyon, where rival gangs of gilets jaunes turned the southeastern … [Read more...] about Gilets jaunes infighting shows the movement is brutally disunited – but Macron is still no match for them

Betrayal! How Nigel Farage’s bizarre Brexit march to London could become an endless, bladder-shattering mess

March 1, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

Forget about Tenerife, Corfu or Tuscany – and needing some silly post- Brexit visa to get there. Nigel Farage has come up with the holiday bargain of the year, if not the decade: the Brexit Betrayal march – two weeks trudging around England, this England, in the mizzle. Here’s the offer, sunseekers. You pay £50 to be a “core marcher” via PayPal to join Nigel’s Brexit Betrayal televised cross-country walk – think of it as Julia Bradbury but without the Julia Bradbury appeal. In return you get the chance to meet Nigel – plus “accommodation”, breakfast and dinner, “free of charge”. The march is due to start in Sunderland on 16 March, and will wind up in the betrayal capital of Britain, if not the universe, Westminster, on 29 March. On that day, the “Independence day” proclaimed by Farage after the 2016 referendum, you will have some further options. When you get to London you will enjoy the wildest gammon-based knees-up you can imagine, either to mark the day when … [Read more...] about Betrayal! I saw children being gassed on the Champs-Elysees last week – police violence in France is out of control

July 20, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

Even in a city as traditionally turbulent as Paris , recent scenes of police violence have been exceptionally shocking. Victims over the past few weeks have ranged from journalists and students to environmentalists and asylum seekers. No matter what their background, or political persuasion, all have been viewed as legitimate targets for heavily armed paramilitaries trained to deal with any perceived threat to order with extreme brutality. These specialist riot control officers – and there are thousands of them – consider summer as a time when every type of undesirable takes to the streets, and they see nothing wrong with imposing their authority as harshly as possible. The sheer horror of the situation was made abundantly clear on the Champs-Elysees last week where – as usual – the catalyst for much social disorder was France’s forces of law and order using chemical weapons on their own citizens. Videos shot on the most famous avenue in the country show young … [Read more...] about I saw children being gassed on the Champs-Elysees last week – police violence in France is out of control

Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy

May 1, 2011 by www.newsweek.com

Of the things Donald Trump has said since he began hinting at a presidential candidacy, the one that most requires challenging is his assertion that people keep asking him to run. Journalists are vigilant defenders of truth when the subject is President Obama's birthplace or OPEC prices. They are credulous when it comes to explaining populist movements. They assume the impetus always comes from the demand side. People are "fed up"! There is an "anti-incumbent sentiment" in the air! Such demand-side sentiments can explain a lot—but not why certain members of the public might wish to be governed by a billionaire yahoo. For that, it is just as important to look at the supply side. Trump's candidacy comes from a sociological fact—the steady rise of plutocracy over the last quarter century—as well as a public sentiment. The truth is not universally enough acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of political influence. Diversifying one's portfolio to include … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
