President Donald Trump made his case for a crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border in a speech to the country Tuesday night. But Trump and members of his administration have repeatedly made false statements about immigration, legal and illegal, to bolster a need for a wall — or at least steel slats — and baseless assertions that Mexico will pay for it, recently through the new trade deal. On Twitter Monday night, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said "the processing system at CBP and our partner agencies has hit capacity." The tweet was in response to news stories that 15 Honduran immigrants, including some children as young as five, were not allowed into the border station at Otay Mesa, California Friday night. But Kara Lynum, a lawyer with American Immigration Lawyers Association who was held outside the Otay Mesa border station with the 15 Honduran immigrants Monday, said the station was not full. She said she knows this because the … [Read more...] about Advocates: Trump admin lying when it says it can’t process any more asylum seekers

Medical personnel are not staffed in the remote area where they were held, known as Antelope Wells, the officials said. Before the group left Antelope Wells by bus to be transferred to a border station, her father reported that she was ill and vomiting. NBC News has learned that more than three-quarters of those 600 have been charged with illegal entry into the United States, illegal re-entry after a deportation order, and drunk driving, according to two sources. The remainder have been charged with more serious crimes. The breakdown of charges provides context over what has become a fraught political issue. President Donald Trump repeatedly warned of dangers posed by the caravan ahead of the midterm … [Read more...] about Are there really 600 criminals in the migrant caravan at the border?

Chernow wrote the 2004 biography of Hamilton that spawned the eponymous Broadway musical.“The White House Correspondents’ Association has asked me to make the case for the First Amendment and I am happy to oblige,” Chernow said in a statement issued by the correspondents’ association. “Freedom of the press is always a timely subject and this seems like the perfect moment to go back to basics. My major worry these days is that we Americans will forget who we are as a people and historians should serve as our chief custodians in preserving that rich storehouse of memory.”RELATED: Photos from … [Read more...] about White House correspondents’ dinner won’t feature comedian for first time in 16 years
