Ozzy, wife Sharon Osbourne and Jack discussed the Black Sabbath musician's journey to teetotalism during a video interview with Variety. How EastEnders star Diane Parish made the journey from Lovejoy to Albert Square
Diane Parish has been a familiar presence in Albert Square since rocking up on EastEnders as Denise Fox in 2006. The four-times married, mother-of-three has endured something of a tempestuous time in the long-running soap, during which she’s enjoyed a one-night fling with Phil Mitchell, survived a bus crash and descended into poverty. Life off screen, though, has proved rather more ‘normal’ if rather busy for Diane, who first appeared on the soap back in 1998, playing singer Lola Christie, an experience she’d rather forget. “I don’t sing, I’m not a singer and it was horrible! Oh, it was awful,” she revealed on TV programme Secrets of The Square. “I remember Patsy Palmer came up to me at one point and she goes: ‘Oh don’t worry, it sounds really good, don’t worry about it’. Playlist: The 20 best albums from 1968
After the heady daze and smorgasbord of musical treasures of 1967, 1968 was the year that rock music finally grew up. It was the year that album sales outstripped singles for the first time, with the album cover – following on from 1967’s Sgt Pepper and The Velvet Underground and Nico – becoming an intrinsic part of the whole long player experience. The double album came of age and new genres like heavy rock sprung up. Psychedelia was still a prevailing trend but there were also folk and blues revivals as artists looked to the past as they moved forward. The move towards a more rootsier, stripped-back approach to the music caught on and informed much of the best music of the year. Recommended Playlist: The 10 greatest singles from 1968 Soul music, still reeling from the loss of Otis Redding, was very much in rude health in the form of Stax and Motown, with the latest black music offshoot – psychedelic soul – just about to go stratospheric. My childhood friend was killed by a police officer. America failed him — and so did I
Recently, Evanston, Illinois became the first US city to begin issuing slavery reparations. And this week, the House voted to create a commission exploring legislation on further reparations for all Black Americans. It feels like change could be in the air. I grew up in Evanston. Racial diversity was one of the reasons my parents chose to move there, as it had the only sizable Black community on Chicago’s North Shore. When I was in third grade, our school system was desegregated. The lines were redrawn, and the students of a previously segregated Black school were split between a number of grammar schools — one of which was mine, Miller Elementary. To me, it didn’t seem like a big deal — I had a couple of Black friends in my class already who had lived within the old boundaries — but, of course, to most others, it was. Our desegregation made national news. Dr Martin Luther King mentioned Evanston in his speeches; he even visited. I knew none of this. I was eight years … [Read more...] about My childhood friend was killed by a police officer. America failed him — and so did I
Sacred Games Only Indian Show to Make It to NYT’s 30 Best TV Series of the Decade List
If streaming was the television story of the decade, then close behind was the explosion of global content that came to American screens to help fill all that new bandwidth. Shows suddenly appeared from all over the world, most noticeably financed or acquired by Netflix but also flooding in through myriad other streaming services and cable networks. Americans will read subtitles, it turns out. (I’d prefer to think no one’s choosing the dubbed English soundtracks.) The world is a big place, with a lot of production companies, and on any given day in 2019 there were likely to be more international shows premiering in America than American-made shows. Over the years I’ve tried to sample as much of that bounty as I could, from cozy British mysteries to florid Asian soap operas and everything in between. I’ve distilled all those hours into this list of my top 30 international shows of the last decade, full of glaring omissions. The requirements for my list: scripted series produced … [Read more...] about Sacred Games Only Indian Show to Make It to NYT’s 30 Best TV Series of the Decade List
‘Reminisce’: 25 Years Later, Mary J. Blige, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Reigns Supreme
It’s been a long and winding — and yet triumphant — road since a street-savvy, aspiring singer from Yonkers’ Schlobohm housing projects came to the attention of Uptown Records executives via a karaoke style cassette tape of her singing Anita Baker’s ‘Caught Up in the Rapture.’ That was over a quarter of a century ago and the music scene, which was already awoken by the platinum-selling potential of hardcore hip-hop music, was already in gear to experience a seismic shift. The young woman’s birth name was Mary Jane Blige and she had a look and sound that was quite a polarizing contrast to what the record industry grew comfortable with for a black R&B vocalist. But thanks to the risk-taking efforts of Uptown Records honcho Andre Harrell (a former rapper, himself) and his ambitious and audacious team of image builders (including Kirk Burrowes, Sybil Pennix, Lisa Cambridge, Malika Thompson and the omnipresent Sean “Puffy” Combs) a legend was born. Gone were the shiny, … [Read more...] about ‘Reminisce’: 25 Years Later, Mary J. Blige, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Reigns Supreme
