As the story broke that Theresa May will face a vote of no-confidence on the evening of Wednesday December 12th, the uncertainty that many Brits across Europe face merely intensified. In a press release headlined 'politicians are playing Russian roulette with our lives', British in Europe, the group that counts 30,000 members across Europe but is campaigning for the rights of more than a million Brits living in the EU, said the delayed vote and the leadership challenge "obscured the dramatic position of the five million citizens most affected by Brexit." The figure of five million is reached by combining the total number of Brits living in Europe, as well as the total figure for EU citizens living in the UK. More than 50,000 Brits live in Italy alone – some estimates suggest that number is higher. Photos of the high-powered meetings published by Repubblica show a sea of ties, with rows of male politicians and male business leaders on either side of the table. The difficult task of spotting the females among them is like playing a depressing version of Where’s Wally. At the first meeting, called by Labour Minister Luigi Di Maio, there were no women present on the government’s side and only two women among the 36 heads of industry. At a second meeting called by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, the picture was almost the same except – spot the difference – there was only one woman in the room this time. The pictures sum up the sad state of gender equality in Italy, where just 17 percent of the current government is female. There are five female ministers in the cabinet of 18, and only 14 percent of Italian mayors are women. The number of female prime ministers or presidents in Italy past or present, meanwhile, is a big fat zero. The current Italian … [Read more...] about OPINION: Why are there so few women in Italy’s most powerful jobs?
France and Italy will not be held to different standards on their budget deficits, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Pierre Moscovici told AFP. Rome, facing possible EU sanctions over its big-spending budget, has demanded similar treatment for France where President Emmanuel Macron's concessions to "yellow vest" protestors threaten to blow-out deficit targets. "There is no question of privileged treatment for some and exaggerated toughness for others," Moscovici said on the sidelines of a financial conference in Frankfurt. ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte could call off a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker scheduled for Wednesday as the ruling coalition parties are resisting any major reduction to next year's deficit target, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported. The European Commission has rejected Rome's budget, which predicts the deficit will rise to 2.4 percent of gross domestic product in 2019 from 1.8 percent this year, saying it will not cut Italy's large public debt as the rules require.gi The two coalition partners, the right-wing League and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, are not willing to reduce the 2019 deficit/GDP target to below 2.1 percent, La Repubblica said, complicating efforts to avoid EU disciplinary action. The League is tempted to go to early elections in March if the EU decides to discipline Italy and is planning to use the clash with Brussels in its election campaign, the paper added, citing rumours.
