Apple Is Removing Old Apps From Its iPhone App Store: Here’s Why

April 30, 2022 by www.news18.com

Tech giant Apple, which has been removing apps that no longer receive updates, has clarified that outdated apps are being removed from the App Store as nobody was downloading them. Apple said that developers of apps that have not been updated within the last three years and fail to meet a minimal download threshold are receiving “an email notifying them that their app has been identified for possible removal from the App Store”. It means that the “app has not been downloaded at all or extremely few times during a rolling 12 month period”, it said in an update late on Friday. While Apple will remove the outdated apps from the App Store, any previously downloaded apps will remain on users’ devices. Earlier this week, several app makers, like Protopop Games developer Robert Kabwe, expressed their concerns about the change. Apple said that developers can appeal app removals. “And developers, including those who recently received a notice, will now be given more time to update their … [Read more...] about Apple Is Removing Old Apps From Its iPhone App Store: Here’s Why

What the app, VocalisCheck, basically does is it asks you to loudly count from 50 to 70 while that audio is recorded on your phone. The audio map is transformed into a spectrogram which looks a lot like a heat image, which is then compared with heat maps from the audio of COVID patients and you get a result. The app has been developed by Vocalis Health, an Israeli tech company, that is relying on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to match the characteristics your voice to the database of samples already in place, to identify how much of a risk you are at. Interestingly enough, this app has also been tested in India and returned with a greater than 80% accuracy rate. In February this year, Vocalis Health had conducted a clinical study jointly with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) at … [Read more...] about This App Promises To Tell If You Have COVID Symptoms, Just By Making You Count Loudly

Apple facing full trial over anti-competitive App Store practices claim

July 1, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Apple could face a full trial in the UK over allegations it breached competition law by overcharging people for apps on its App Store after the tech giant’s attempt to have a legal claim dismissed was refused. In a judgment handed down by the Competition Appeal Tribunal, Apple’s argument that the collective action legal claim brought by Dr Rachael Kent on the issue was defective was dismissed, and the case was cleared to proceed. The legal claim, which was filed last year, accuses Apple of deliberately shutting out the competition in the store and forcing people to use its own payment processing system, generating “excessive” profits for itself in the process. It argues that forcing developers to use Apple’s payment systems for in-app purchases and taking up to 30% commission on those transactions is unfair and has forced up prices for consumers. Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu

May 11, 2018 by www.theatlantic.com

L egend says the diver drowned retrieving the pearl. Trapped in a giant Tridacna clam, his body was brought to the surface by his fellow tribesmen in Palawan, a province of the Philippines, in May 1934. When the clam was pried open, and the meat scraped out, the local chief beheld something marvelous: a massive pearl, its sheen like satin. In its surface, the chief discerned the face of the Prophet Muhammad. He named it the Pearl of Allah. At 14 pounds, one ounce, it was the largest pearl ever discovered. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. A Filipino American, Wilburn Dowell Cobb, was visiting the island at the time and offered to buy the jewel. In a 1939 article that appeared in Natural History magazine, he recounted the chief’s refusal to sell: “A pearl with the image of Mohammed, the Prophet of Allah, is earned by devotion, by sacrifice, not bought with money.” But when the chief’s son fell ill with malaria, Cobb used … [Read more...] about Chasing the Pearl of Lao Tzu
