Tory minister Rachel Maclean yesterday sparked fury in a car crash interview where she suggested Brits struggling for money should work more hours or get better paid jobs. As the cost of living continues to increase, putting more pressure on everyday people to pay for the bills, the “tone deaf” sentiments were slammed by Brits and the opposition party. Talking to Sky News, she said: “I think what we need to focus on now is over the long-term. “We do have these short-term pressures on us that we're all aware of. But over the long-term we need to have a plan to grow the economy and make sure that people are able to protect themselves better, whether that is by taking on more hours or moving to a better-paid job.” Rachel Maclean sparked fury in the Sky News interview on Monday ( Image: Sky) The Prime Minister's official spokesman waded into the row, adding the Home Office Minister was clear “people’s circumstances may vary”. RJD veteran Shivanand Tiwari stirs hornet’s nest with Rahul’s criticism
The Congress’ dismal performance in the Bihar assembly elections has drawn biting criticism from ally RJD, with party veteran leader Shivanand Tiwari saying the grand old party had “shackled” the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the State. Mr. Tiwari’s remarks made during interviews with TV channels prompted calls for his outster from the RJD. “Congress shackled the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ with chains in the Assembly elections. It contested 70 seats but did not hold even 70 rallies. “Rahul Gandhi visited Bihar on three days and addressed two rallies a day. Priyanka Gandhi was not seen at all. When electioneering was at its peak, he was picnicking with Priyanka Gandhi in Shimla,” Mr. Tiwari, who is considered close to RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and is part of its old guard, said. The Congress reacted sharply to Mr. Tiwari’s criticism. “Shivanand Tiwari is not an official spokesman for the RJD. He is hand in gloves with the BJP and JD(U), and is speaking their language. IPL 2022, MI vs DC | Rishabh Pant is right choice for captaincy, no doubt in my mind: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting
Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting on May 21 backed Rishabh Pant after his strategic blunder cost the team a spot in the play-offs, saying he is still young and learning the ropes of captaincy and remains the right choice for the job. With Mumbai Indians at 95 for 3 in 14.3 overs while chasing a target of 160, Pant made a strategic blunder as he refused to go for DRS after Tim David nicked the first ball of his innings and the onfield umpire didn’t give him out. It came back to haunt DC as David slammed 34 runs off just 11 balls with the help of two boundaries and four sixes to take the game out of DC’s grasp. “Absolutely, no doubt in my mind that Rishabh even in the last season he was the right choice for captain. Rishabh did a terrific job with the team after he took over from Shreyas [Iyer] after he injured his shoulders,” Ponting said during the press conference after DC lost by five wickets against MI. “...he is just a young man and still learning captaincy. Being captain … [Read more...] about IPL 2022, MI vs DC | Rishabh Pant is right choice for captaincy, no doubt in my mind: Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting

‘NIMBYism is destroying the state.’ Gavin Newsom ups pressure on cities to build more housing
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom defended his administration’s work on housing and homelessness during an interview with The Chronicle’s editorial board Thursday, promising to crack down on local opposition to housing projects. “Taxpayers deserve more in terms of results, not just inputs,” Newsom said. “They want to see results.” In the last few years, Newsom has been responsible for putting more state funding into housing and homelessness programs than any other recent governor. His previous budgets have poured billions in funding to increase housing production and help get homeless people off the streets, but Californians aren’t yet seeing results they want, as they continue to rank housing and homelessness as top concerns. Three years into Newsom’s tenure, housing production remains sluggish. Although preliminary numbers show the homeless population has shrunk in San Francisco , it’s grown in almost every other Bay Area county that reported data last week. Where’s the … [Read more...] about ‘NIMBYism is destroying the state.’ Gavin Newsom ups pressure on cities to build more housing
