Day after day for 13 years, Abe Louise Young and Alan Shefsky wrote each other a letter. They wrote on big paper and little paper, on notecards and postcards, in longhand and by typewriter. They wrote poems and prose, shared jokes and dreams and dark feelings.“Dear Alan,” she wrote in one, “For you I resurrect the fountain pen.”One day, well into their correspondence, Young told her mailman in Austin, Texas, that she was going to visit Chicago. The mailman, who knew the postmarks on the daily letters, said, “I hope that man is going to marry you.”But it wasn’t that kind of relationship.“Alan was straight, I’m lesbian,” Young said on Thursday. “We were spiritual partners.”Young, 41, said this as she stood in the Space 900 gallery on Dempster Avenue in Evanston, where she was preparing an exhibit of some of the thousands of letters she and Shefsky exchanged before he died in 2014 at age 55.“What I hope people … [Read more...] about For 13 years, 2 friends wrote letters daily. 0 Have your say Graham Noble completely ignores the big Gaza picture (No comparison, Apr 11). The nearest example would be for Ireland to return to a hard border with Northern Ireland and a fence is built to stop the IRA getting through to the north and to also stop smuggling, which was a problem before we joined the EU.30,000 demonstrators turn up with IRA militants imbedded in the crowds. They have made it clear their intention is to break down the fence and march into Northern Ireland to throw out the Protestants. They attack the fence and hack holes in it while other are sling-shotting fire bombs and rocks at British soldiers. Black smoke from hundreds of burning tyres makes it difficult to see what is happening. There are also attacks at night. This is all happening on the Gaza/Israeli border right now. Are you telling me the British Army would not open fire and some would be killed? Dream on.Read what happened on Bloody Sunday.Graham Noble and his anti-Israel groups … [Read more...] about LETTER OF THE DAY: Anti-Israelis should be more concerned with Syria
A prosecution expert in the murder trial of Yoselyn Ortega on Tuesday defended his assertion that the Upper West Side nanny wasn’t legally insane when she fatally stabbed two children in her care — pointing to her bid to save herself from a self-inflicted knife wound. Psychologist Ali Khadivi testified that Ortega exhibited “intent” — the legal standard required for sanity — in the bathroom of the Krim family home on W. 72nd St. after she killed 6-year-old Lulu and Leo, 2, on Oct. 25, 2012. Ortega plunged a 13-inch kitchen knife into her neck after attacking the children, then tried to save herself by pressing a towel against the wound to staunch the blood, he testified. “There’s nothing about the bathroom … to suggest to me she was in a dissociative state of mind,” Khadivi said. “Furthermore, while she’s in the bathroom she forms other invention, including the last intention (which) is trying to save her life … [Read more...] about Nanny who fatally stabbed two kids exhibited ‘intent’ and wasn’t legally insane, expert testifies
A Florida man intentionally plowed his vehicle into a police station in Miami, prompting an evacuation and a response from the department’s bomb squad. The driver, Giftson Cherenfant, rammed his red Impala through the gate before driving into the North District Substation just after 7 a.m. Friday. He was the only one injured in the early morning crash and was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition. “If he would have stopped there, then perhaps there’s still a chance that’s accidental,” Chief Jorge Colina said during a press conference after the crash. “But the fact that he continues, regains speed and then plows into the wall leads us to belief that it was intentional.” A nearby police sergeant spotted the chaos unfold and used his own vehicle to pin Cherenfant’s car against the wall. The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras and officers are continuing to investigate. … [Read more...] about Florida man intentionally rams car into Miami police station
Home Daily News ABA letter expresses concern about Sessions'… Attorney General By Debra Cassens Weiss Posted March 13, 2018, 12:18 pm CDT ABA President Hilarie Bass has written a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions that urges him to continue to prioritize access to justice as he makes reorganization decisions. The March 13 letter follows a report last month by the New York Times that said the Justice Department has “effectively shuttered” its Office for Access to Justice. The office was established in the previous administration to improve access to legal resources by poor people. The office had filed statements of interest in lawsuits alleging poor people were being denied effective legal services, according to the Times. The office also supported a class action that claimed New York state was violating the rights of poor criminal defendants. Bass’ letter expresses concern about Sessions’ “apparent intent to close its Office for Access to … [Read more...] about ABA letter expresses concern about Sessions’ ‘apparent intent’ to close Access to Justice office
