Nic Newman, a senior research associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and former world editor of the BBC News website, said many young people had switched from Facebook. Fake news is now spreading to young people through “memes and visual storytelling” on Instagram, he told a conference on Tuesday. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is mainly used for sharing photos and has not traditionally been a major source of news for social media users. Florida State University President John Thrasher is calling a fan's social media post depicting football coach Willie Taggart getting lynched "ignorant and despicable." FSU ended a disappointing first season under Taggart with a loss Saturday to in-state rival the University of Florida. Many fans took to social media, expressing their disappointment. But one Facebook post included a meme depicting an image of Taggart, who is black, being superimposed on what appears to be a historical picture of a real lynching – with a chain around the man's neck, along with the words: "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing your rep." The original post came with the caption: "I'm dead [expletive] serious. This is how far I'm willing to go to get rid of this clown!!!" In a statement issued Sunday, Thrasher indicated the post is being investigated by the state attorney. As long as we have had databases and the Internet, we have had "stalking." And things have only gotten easier with the advent of social media. The "stalking" -- the harmless satisfaction of curiosity kind and not the should-get-you-arrested kind -- makes sense though. We’re curious creatures by nature, and we have all of this data right in front of our faces. It's as if it was made just to be over-analyzed by our highly evolved brains. It’s become the social media game, for better or for worse, and if you’re going to stalk someone’s Instagram - well, you may as well do it right. Opening a second account is one way to go about this. 'Kids' these days refer to this as a “Finsta." It is essentially a fake Instagram account and not the regular account you use (or "Rinsta.") Finstas are not supposed to be taken all that seriously.
