Motorists and fellow passengers rushed to rescue a child after he fell out of a car window . The terrifying clip was recorded at an intersection in Ningbo, a city in eastern China just south of Shanghai. In surveillance footage cars can be seen queuing at a red light, as a child suddenly appears out of the passenger-side window of a white vehicle. As the driver pulls out and the car moves away, the child topples out of the window and hits the ground. He's then left lying in the middle of the road as the car that was carrying him speeds away. At one point, another white car is seen approaching the boy before blocking the road to prevent any further injury. Several vehicles stop as stunned drivers and passengers get out of their cars to rescue him. The first man to reach him quickly picks him up and moves him from the dangers of the road, carrying him to safety on the other side of the pedestrian crossing. The child fell out of a moving car on a busy road in … [Read more...] about Child falls out of car window onto busy road as driver pulls away at junction

COVID in California: U.S. secures 66 million doses of Moderna omicron booster
U.S. officials agreed to purchase 66 million Moderna omicron boosters , intending to make extra shots available this fall and winter. A new CDC report suggested that children maybe be at an increased risk for blood clots, heart problems, kidney failure, and Type 1 diabetes after getting COVID. The Chronicle’s Pandemic Problems advice column tackled a question from a reader who asked how long COVID stays in the air after an infected person leaves a room. Latest updates: Fauci: Get vaccinated and boosted, or you’re “going to get into trouble” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, is urging people to stay up to date on their vaccines against COVID-19 as colder months approach. “There are enough people who don’t fall into (high-risk) categories that if they don’t get vaccinated if they don’t get boosted, they’re going to get into trouble,” Fauci told KNX’s “In Depth” show this week. About 77% of the U.S. population is not up to date on its … [Read more...] about COVID in California: U.S. secures 66 million doses of Moderna omicron booster
Child rapist dies of Covid in prison after being jailed for sadistic sex attacks
A sadistic child rapist who molested four young girls in a spate of sex attacks dating back to the 1970s has died in prison weeks after testing positive for coronavirus . Derrick Sheppard, who was originally sentenced to 12 years in jail in 2011, passed away at the age of 82-years-old at HMP Exeter on December 26, 2020. A year after his sentencing, Appeal Court judges agreed the prison term was “unduly lenient” and did not reflect the gravity of his campaign of abuse. The jail term was increased to 16 years with lawyers correctly predicting he would "die in jail". Mr Sheppard, previously of Glebe Close, Upton Pyne, near Exeter, was found guilty of three rapes, two attempted rapes and 12 offences of indecency, reports Devon Live. An inquest was held today, July 25, at Exeter's County Hall into his death. It was heard how the former manual labourer suffered from a number of health problems including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure and chronic … [Read more...] about Child rapist dies of Covid in prison after being jailed for sadistic sex attacks

Amazon employees have resorted to urinating in trash cans in some warehouses
Rumors about the working conditions at Amazon warehouses and on the delivery routes have circulated for years. Time off around the holidays, adequate breaks on shift and appropriate wages are all reportedly missing from the lives of some Amazon employees. Some workers for the company are allegedly on food stamps and receive other federal assistance, but Amazon, like other large companies, doesn't cover the cost of that assistance, and Senator Bernie Sanders wants that to change. Sanders introduced a bill on September 5 that would tax employers, like Amazon, when their employees need federal benefits, like Medicaid and food stamps, to help cover the cost of those services. The bill is called the "Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies Act" or the "Stop BEZOS Act," just like the Amazon CEO's last name. The lack of a living wage—the multibillion-dollar company pays some employees as little as $11 an hour Sanders said—is just one of the working conditions employees have … [Read more...] about Amazon employees have resorted to urinating in trash cans in some warehouses

Israel launches wave of strikes in Gaza killing senior Palestinian commander and girl, 5
Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza strip killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander, along with at least nine others including a five-year-old girl, prompting vows of retaliation from the militant group. Tayseer al-Jabari, a commander of the Al-Quds Brigade - the military arm of the Islamic Jihad - who the Israeli military described as the main coordinator between Islamic Jihad and Hamas, was confirmed dead. Following the attack, sirens have sounded in parts of Israel as rockets were fired into the country, seemingly following up on threats from the militant group. Alongside the commander, six others including a five year-old girl died in the strikes on the centre of Gaza, the Gaza health ministry confirmed, with 44 people being wounded. Images streamed on television showed smoke pouring from the roof of a building in the heavily populated strip, as civil defence teams rushed to the scene to evacuate the building and put out fires. Brussels residents wary but attack seemed ‘inevitable’
Evening in central Brussels, and the full horror of Tuesday's attacks was clear. At least 31 people lay dead while a further 300 remain injured. A few people were drinking in bars, going outside for cigarettes. There was little of the defiance of Paris, following the attacks there November 13. Then, Parisians flocked to the bars, vowing " tous en terrasses, " promising that despite the militants' assaults, they would continue to eat and drink outside the city's bars and restaurants, in defiance of their oppressors. This time, young men who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State militant group, also known as ISIS, the same group behind the Paris attacks, targeted hard, not soft targets. They didn't seek out the city's pleasure-seekers but its business people and commuters, those taking the metro to work or flights out of the capital. "When they caught Salah Abdeslam [one of the alleged Paris attackers], I thought things seemed calmer," says 23-year-old Boubacar Sow. Having … [Read more...] about Brussels residents wary but attack seemed ‘inevitable’
Russia’s Shortfalls Create an Opportunity for Ukraine, Western Officials Say
WASHINGTON — In the early phase of the war in Ukraine, shortages of soldiers and problems with equipment forced Russia to narrow its mission, abandon its assault on Kyiv and focus its offensive on the east. Now, as the fighting enters its sixth month, critical manpower and equipment problems could again slow Russian operations and give Ukraine’s counteroffensive a better chance to succeed, U.S. and European officials said. The signs of Russia’s challenges abound: artillery shells missing their targets, intercepts of Russian soldiers complaining they have been given old tanks and a sharply rising death and injury toll in its military ranks. But unlike earlier in the war, it could become harder for Russia to reset its strategy and recover, at least in the short term. U.S. and European officials say few powers have conquered a country and destroyed an opposing army with a mostly volunteer force, as President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia is attempting to do. But Mr. … [Read more...] about Russia’s Shortfalls Create an Opportunity for Ukraine, Western Officials Say
