Agencies (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM - ● Fri, August 19 2022 Myanmar's military leadership on Wednesday lashed out at ASEAN for excluding its generals from regional gatherings, accusing it of caving to "external pressure". Members of ASEAN have heaped condemnation on Myanmar's junta, which they say has failed to make concrete progress on a peace plan agreed with the 10-nation bloc last year, including engaging with opponents and a cessation of hostilities. Myanmar's military seized power from an elected government in a coup last year, and has since then crushed dissent with lethal force. Most recently, the junta has been criticized for executing political activists and imprisoning Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of Myanmar's opposition and democracy movement. to Read Full Story SUBSCRIBE NOW Starting from IDR 55,500/month Unlimited access to our web and app content e-Post daily digital newspaper No advertisements, no interruptions Privileged … [Read more...] about Myanmar slams ASEAN after being barred from meetings

Giants QB Daniel Jones reveals he had ‘non-football related’ neck procedure during the offseason
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones revealed on Thursday that he underwent a “non-football related procedure” on his neck “early in the winter.” Jones said the previously undisclosed surgery was “completely unrelated” to the “neck strain” that prematurely ended his 2021 NFL season after a Week 12 injury in Philadelphia. A small scar at the bottom of Jones’ neck, in a photo circulated on social media, prompted a question about whether he’d had surgery to correct last season’s injury. “No, I didn’t. I didn’t at all,” he said. “I had a non-football related procedure done on my neck. I saw there was some [speculation] about it [online]. But it was completely unrelated. I feel good. Neck’s great.” Jones added that the surgery happened “early in the winter” and reiterated that it was “unrelated” to last season’s injury. The press conference was cut off at that point, and he took no more questions on the topic. It’s unheard of nowadays for an NFL team to successfully keep a surgery … [Read more...] about Giants QB Daniel Jones reveals he had ‘non-football related’ neck procedure during the offseason
A Space in Time
In the evenings, when my particular piece of Earth has turned away from the Sun, and is exposed instead to the rest of the cosmos, I sit in front of a keyboard, log on, and seek out the windows that look down at the planets and out at the stars. It's a markedly different experience from looking at reproductions on paper. What I see is closer to the source. In fact, it's indistinguishable from the source. These are images that have never registered on a negative. Like the Internet itself, they are products of a digitized era. Over the past couple of years I've been monitoring the long rectangular strips of Martian surface being beamed across the void, in a steady stream of zeroes and ones, from the umbrella-shaped high-gain antenna of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. These pictures are so fresh that their immediacy practically crackles. Call it "chrono-clarity." That bluish wispy cloud, for example, hovering over the Hecates Tholus volcano, which rears above the pockmarked surface … [Read more...] about A Space in Time
California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Heat advisories remained in effect Thursday in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys and adjacent areas but managers of California’s power grid did not repeat the previous day’s call for voluntary conservation of electricity. Widespread triple-digit temperatures were again predicted, along with high humidity, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses, the National Weather Service said. On Wednesday, the California Independent System Operator asked residents to voluntarily reduce electrical use from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to avoid stress on the grid that can lead to power failures. A surge of monsoon moisture created extensive cloud cover that kept the day’s high in the low 90s in the Sacramento area, but temperatures soared elsewhere in California’s interior. The Redding airport hit a record 110 degrees (43.3 Celsius), Bakersfield baked at … [Read more...] about California heat persists, but no call for power cutbacks
Unseal the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit—but redact it, too | Opinion
U.S. Magistrate Bruce Reinhart must decide what to do about the governments demand that the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit remain sealed. Former President Trump's lawyers have demanded the opposite: that the affidavit be unsealed and open to the public. Under the First Amendment, there is a strong presumption in favor of transparency and public availability of important documents. This presumption is rebuttable upon a showing of good cause. The showing cannot be a general claim that investigations should be protected; it must specifically point out names, words, and sentences whose unsealing would pose a significant danger. Unless such a showing can be made, secrecy is not justified in relation to important documents which the public has a legitimate interest in seeing. Accordingly, Judge Reinhardt should demand of the government that they make a showing of necessity sufficient to overcome the presumption of transparency. The result of such a process would be the release of most of … [Read more...] about Unseal the Mar-a-Lago search affidavit—but redact it, too | Opinion

Ramla Ali: “Working with Meghan Markle changed my life”
I first learned about the Rage on the Red Sea boxing match between heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Olexandr Usyk in around February 2022. That's when myself and my husband, and manager, Richard had the idea to campaign my promoters and the Saudi Arabian organizers to allow me to compete there, and help create positive change. After many months of annoying Frank Smith, my promoter's CEO, we finally got the call we had been waiting for; that I would be fighting against Dominican boxer Crystal Garcia on August 20 in the first ever professional female boxing match in Saudi Arabia. It was an amazing feeling to be part of such a historic moment and a cultural shift towards equality in the region. This fight is the seventh since I began my professional career in 2020, and it's probably both my hardest test in terms of competition and the most important outside of the ring as well. I'm not just representing myself but also all women in combat sports; so the world can see that we deserve … [Read more...] about Ramla Ali: “Working with Meghan Markle changed my life”
Finland’s “partying” PM video draws comparisons to American politicians
The Prime Minister of Finland , Sanna Marin has been accused of "partying" too much, in light of a new leaked video. However, Americans have weighed in by comparing Marin with politicians from the United States who appear to have an altogether different reputation. Some also compared the situation to when a video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing emerged online. A new video of Marin, the 36-year-old Finnish PM, emerged online and was shared by news channel Visegrád 24. The video has been viewed over 1.2 million times on Twitter alone, with thousands of people commenting on and sharing the footage. "She has previously been criticized for attending too many music festivals & spending too much on partying instead of ruling," Visegrád 24 wrote alongside the video footage. "The critics say it's not fitting for a PM." Within the video, which appears to have originally been taken from the Instagram stories of an account called @rayharautio, Marin can be seen singing and … [Read more...] about Finland’s “partying” PM video draws comparisons to American politicians
Data opportunity at the G20
The global politics of data is rapidly evolving as leading and emerging digital economies like the European Union (EU), the U.S., India, Indonesia, and South Africa strive to protect, monetise, and leverage data collected within their territories for domestic purposes. The age of borderless data with limited or no government control, once an aspiration, appears behind us. Increasing privacy and security concerns coupled with economic interests have compelled governments to institute rules and standards that govern and restrict cross-border flows with natural implications for negotiations on global trade and commerce. Indeed, the sheer amount of data being generated and shared globally has necessitated governments to exert more control over the use, sharing, and cross-border flow of data. According to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), data localisation laws have more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, indicating that states seek and want increasing levels of … [Read more...] about Data opportunity at the G20
Crypto hack losses surged 60% to $1.9 billion between January and July, reports Chainalysis
Losses arising from cryptocurrency hacks jumped nearly 60% in the first seven months of the year to $1.9 billion, propelled by a surge in funds stolen from decentralised finance (DeFi) protocols, according to a blog post from blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released on Tuesday. In the same period last year, stolen funds from hacking amounted to $1.2 billion . DeFi applications, many of which run on the Ethereum blockchain, are financial platforms that enable crypto-denominated lending outside of traditional banks. Chainalysis noted that the trend is not likely to reverse any time soon, given the $190 million hacking of cross-chain bridge Nomad and $5 million hacking of several Solana wallets already in the first week of August. "DeFi protocols are uniquely vulnerable to hacking, as their … [Read more...] about Crypto hack losses surged 60% to $1.9 billion between January and July, reports Chainalysis
