Los Angeles Is First in US to Install Subway Body Scanners

· August 14, 2018 ·

Los Angeles' subway will become the first mass transit system in the U.S. to install body scanners that screen passengers for weapons and explosives, officials said Tuesday. The deployment of the portable scanners, which project waves to do full-body screenings of passengers walking through a station without slowing them down, will happen in the coming months, said Alex Wiggins, who runs the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's law enforcement division. The machines scan for metallic and non-metallic objects on a person's body, can detect suspicious items from 30 feet (9 meters) away and have the capability of scanning more than 2,000 passengers per hour. "We're dealing with persistent threats to our transportation systems in our country," said Transportation Security Administration Administrator David Pekoske. "Our job is to ensure security in the transportation systems so that a terrorist incident does not happen on our watch." 3D scanners to reduce queues at UK airports

· August 25, 2019 ·

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that all major airports in Britain must have 3D baggage screening equipment before the end of 2022. Ministers say the new technology will speed up security checks and could see an end to liquid and laptop restrictions. Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye said: "There are two big benefits for this. The first is that that it's a much better experience for passengers, you don't have to bring all your liquids in a separate bag, and your laptop in a separate tray - this will be much, much quicker for them. "The second benefit is much better security. We will be able to detect things that we can't currently detect, and we can anticipate some of the threats that might be coming at us. "This will allow us to have higher security standards than any other airport in the world when we first introduce these. And it will allow us to get ahead of some of the enemy who are trying to disrupt air travel and that gives us a real advantage in keeping people … [Read more...] about 3D scanners to reduce queues at UK airports
