World Children's Books The illustrator Antonio Lupatelli, who under the pseudonym Tony Wolf drew the much-loved penguin Pingu in a series of books, has died aged 88, according to Italian media. Lupatelli was born in 1930 in Busseto, Italy, and died in Cremona on May 18, La Repubblica reported. His long, prolific career saw him illustrating children's books and comics for European publishers, among them Fleetway in Britain and Fratelli Fabbri Editori and Lo Scarabeo in Italy. His best known work in his native Italy were his fairy tale creations, featuring dragons, gnomes and other mythical creatures. He regularly illustrated classic fairy tales and created “Fairy Tarot” cards. In the 1980s, he wrote and illustrated The Woodland Folk series. At various times in his career, Lupatelli was known by his real name, Tony Wolf, Oda Taro, L'Alpino and Antony Moore. In a landmark Judgment [State of Bihar & Ors. Vs. Rajmangal Ram ] the Supreme Court yesterday re-iterated that the high Courts have no power to interdict a criminal proceeding midcourse on the basis of the legitimacy or otherwise of the order of sanction to prosecute. The Supreme Court was considering two appeals by the State of Bihar against separate orders  passed by the High Court of Patna, the effect of which is that the criminal proceedings instituted against the respondents under different provisions of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 have been interdicted on the ground that sanction for prosecution of the respondents in both the cases has been granted by the Law Department of the State and not by the parent department to which the respondents belong. In a recent alert, we reported on two recent cases before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) involving a provision of the National Labor Relations Act (the Act) that protects employees’ rights to engage in “concerted activity.” Under this provision of the Act, “concerted activity” includes, among other things, two or more employees discussing wages, hours, or working conditions. The Act prohibits employers from disciplining or discriminating against employees who engage in such discussions. This “concerted activity” protection extends to employees whether or not they are unionized.In one of the cases discussed in our earlier alert, the employer allegedly fired an employee for her disparaging Facebook posts about a supervisor, to which several of her Facebook “friends” who were also co-workers added their comments. Recent events, such as the shootings at a nursing home in North Carolina and an immigration center in New York, illustrate the need for employers to pay attention to the risks of workplace violence and take protective measures.   According to the latest survey of fatal workplace injuries by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, assaults and other violent acts were the fourth leading cause of workplace fatalities, and workplace homicides amounted to approximately 10% of all workplace fatalities.   Some types of workplaces are more likely than others to experience workplace violence.  The BLS survey indicates that workplace violence is most common at late-night retail establishments such as convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations.  However, the recent shootings in North Carolina and New York and other shootings and hostage-takings show that all types of employers face some risk of  having an incident of workplace … [Read more...] about Recent Events Illustrate Need for Attention to Risks of Workplace Violence
