Souichi Terada Special to Detroit Free Press Published 6:30 AM EDT Oct 5, 2018 While most of Michigan State football’s recruiting class is set, the main conflict right now comes from another Big Ten program: Ohio State. The Buckeyes offered offensive lineman J.D. Duplain a scholarship on Oct. 2. Duplain is still committed to the Spartans – the Strongsville, Ohio, product originally committed to MSU on Aug. 1. “The guy that probably stands out No. 1 right now, as far as the Ohioans, is J.D. Duplain,” said Bill Kurelic, Ohio football recruiting analyst for 247Sports. “Because Ohio State just offered him a scholarship. And that’s going to be interesting to see what he does. He’s still committed to Michigan State, but now he has that Ohio State scholarship offer.” The Spartans have a total of 16 commitments, headlined by Devontae Dobbs and Julian Barnett. The Belleville teammates are by far the highest-recruited players for … [Read more...] about Michigan State football: Will J.D. Duplain stay committed?
Sean Merriman Special to Detroit Free Press Published 10:35 AM EDT Oct 3, 2018 While Michigan State football is off to a 3-1 start this season and set to host Northwestern on Saturday (noon, Fox Sports 1), there is still plenty of work to be done on the recruiting front for Mark Dantonio and his staff. The Spartans have 16 verbal commitments in the 2019 class, and will likely add three to five more prospects to a class that ranks No. 26 nationally, according to 247Sports.com. There aren’t one or two recruits who appear to be obvious locks for this class right now, but there are several prospects that the Spartans are targeting. Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 11:30 AM EDT Sep 23, 2018 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Already with a number of players nursing ailments, Michigan State football added even more casualties during the 23rd-ranked Spartans’ 35-21 win at Indiana to open Big Ten play. Still without CB Josiah Scott, P Jake Hartbarger and DE Dillon Alexander, MSU lost WR Darrell Stewart Jr. (left ankle), RG Kevin Jarvis (right ankle), LG Luke Campbell (right leg), CB Josh Butler and WR Cam Chambers during the win. Stewart, Chambers and Jarvis did not return, and Butler was injured on MSU’s next-to-last defensive drive. Campbell did return late and blocked the left side for Jalen Nailor’s 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 7:13 PM EDT Sep 22, 2018 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — There’s a new name on a Michigan State football jersey for Saturday night’s Big Ten opener at Indiana. There also at least one important player here as well. Whether Bryce Baringer punts for the 23rd-ranked Spartans against the Hoosiers instead of backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi remains to be seen. The same holds true for senior running back LJ Scott, who made the trip to Indiana and was warming up after appearing to tweak his right hamstring at Arizona State on Sept. 8, and missing all but two plays of the second half of the Spartans' 16-13 loss to the Sun Devils.
