CAIRO, Ill. — There are not as many pickup basketball games these days. Not as many kids dribbling in the street after school. Not anymore, at least. Not since the town's two biggest public housing complexes closed a year ago.Except some afternoons still have a slow pulse, like on this Thursday in early April, with a handful of kids skipping around a skinny block on Cairo's northern end. The street would then fall quiet again, like the ones next to it and the ones across town and the ones weaving through the Elmwood and McBride housing complexes, where about 400 people used to live and now only a few dozen families remain. But first there was an important game of one-on-one basketball to play, as two little boys bounded toward baskets on each side of the block, focusing hard to keep the ball from striking the uneven pavement and bouncing out of … [Read more...] about Ben Carson called this Illinois town a ‘dying community.’ Its people, and basketball, are hanging on.
Coach Brad Underwood’s reconstruction of the Illinois basketball roster officially entered the next phase Wednesday with the addition of five signees to the Class of 2018 that’s headlined by Morgan Park’s Ayo Dosunmu.Joining Dosunmu — a five-star guard who signed in November — are junior-college transfer Andres Feliz, a 6-foot-2 point guard, and four other high school recruits: 6-5 combo guard Alan Griffin, 6-7 shooting guard Tevian Jones, 6-9 forward Giorgi Bezhanishvili, 7-foot center Samba Kane. The class ranks 28th nationally and seventh in the Big Ten in the 247Sports.com composite rankings. The signings follow transfers this spring by freshman guard Mark Smith, sophomore guard Te’Jon Lucas and redshirt junior forward Michael Finke as well as the early departure to turn pro by redshirt junior forward Leron Black.Underwood said the members of the 2018 class had been on the staff’s radar for some time.“The evaluation process is … [Read more...] about Illinois coach Brad Underwood says 2018 signing class gives him ‘options’
Out of high school, Ryan Taylor’s recruiting profile was solid enough to merit interest from mid-majors.As a graduate student on the transfer market, his list of suitors was absurd.Taylor said he felt overwhelmed by texts and phone calls from the staffs of more than 40 schools, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Oregon, Miami and Indiana.“Ridiculous,” he said Monday with a chuckle. But one school stood out — Northwestern.Taylor, a 6-foot-6 swingman who averaged 21.2 points and shot 42.1 percent from 3-point range for Evansville last season, has given coach Chris Collins a verbal commitment. He will be eligible next season.ESPN’s Jeff Goodman first reported the transfer.Taylor told the Tribune he chose Northwestern “because of the connection I made with Coach Collins and the staff and players, especially A.J. (Turner) and Dererk Pardon. I went on a visit last weekend, and I connected with the guys right away. It’s rare when that happens.
