Timm As President Donald Trump pushed Congress this week to give him the funds he demanded for his border wall, part of his pitch was based the false claim that illegal immigration costs the country hundreds of billions of dollars. Shelling out $5 billion for his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would be a pittance in comparison, he suggested repeatedly. The wall would pay for itself, he argued. Earlier in December, he said the cost was $250 billion per year. On Dec. 18, he put the cost at "more than $200 billion per year." At a bill signing event on the White House on Thursday, he said, “Illegal immigration costs our nation $275 billion a year." What are the facts behind the economic impact of immigrants? We checked his figures withimmigration and tax policy experts across the … [Read more...] about Fact check: How much does illegal immigration cost America? Not nearly as much as Trump claims.
Democrats believe illegal immigration and border security are important issues that must be addressed — but it is wrong to "pretend" building a "great big wall" is the solution, Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., said Wednesday. In remarks to Fox News' "America's Newsroom," Kildee did not dispute that Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., all have publicly decried the problems illegal immigration have caused the nation. "The question is what is the solution?" he said. "And none of those people believe – and including a lot of Republicans – that we should just pretend that putting up a great, big wall is going to solve that problem." Kildee said drug traffickers and terrorists not only sneak into the country through unsecured sections of the southern border — but make it through border checkpoints too. "We shouldn't just act as if, and pretend that, putting up a wall is going to solve the problem when … [Read more...] about Dem Argues Wall Isn’t Solution to Illegal Immigration Problem
America’s top earners, by a majority, support a plan to raise taxes on themselves in order to help stop illegal immigration to the United States. A new Rasmussen Reports Poll finds that Americans earning $200,000 or more are the only economic demographic group willing to hike taxes on themselves to stop rising illegal immigration levels at the U.S.-Mexico border.About 56 percent of Americans earning $200,000 or more said they would pay an additional $100 to more than $1,000 a year in their federal taxes if it meant less illegal immigration arriving at the country’s southern border. About 60 percent of Americans who “strongly approve” of Trump say they would be willing to hike their taxes between $100 to more than $1,000 a year to stop illegal immigration at the border. The poll comes as Trump’s administration could, once again, punt funding for a border wall into the new year. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hinted that the … [Read more...] about Majority of Wealthy Support Hiking their Taxes to Stop Illegal Immigration
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivered major wins for President Trump’s administration on the immigration front in 2018, effectively putting into place legal reforms at the U.S.-Mexico border that significantly increased the number of illegal aliens prosecuted and convicted. During his tenure running the Department of Justice (DOJ), Sessions put into place a legal wall at the southern border to stem the tide of rising illegal immigration to the country and prevent border crossers from being released into the interior of the country after being caught by Border Patrol.Sessions’ border reforms included a hiring spree of immigration prosecutors, sending additional immigration judges and prosecutors to the border to speed up deportations, enacting a series of asylum reforms to tighten rules, and majorly expanding prosecutorial discretion over border crossers. The latest numbers from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for Fiscal Year 2018 reveal how … [Read more...] about Jeff Sessions’ Reforms More than Doubled Illegal Immigration Convictions
President Trump’s administration may build more tent cities to detain and house illegal aliens and Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) amid a border crisis wherein illegal immigration has skyrocketed to decade-high levels. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) data released to NPR reveals that the administration’s first round of tent cities to house border crossers are near full capacity, with nearly 15,000 UACs in federal custody.Currently, HHS has more than 100 facilities to house the UACs, but about 92 percent of those facilities are full. The possibility of full-capacity at the tent cities is forcing the Trump administration to weigh the option of building more tent cities, a plan that would be sure to help wipe out the Catch and Release process whereby border crossers are caught and then released due to the lack of federal detention space. The NPR report admits that the vast majority of the UACs detained in the tent cities are young Central American boys who … [Read more...] about Trump May Build More Tent Cities Amid Skyrocketing Illegal Immigration
