For the first time, a team of climate and water experts has predicted patterns of declining ice cover in northern freshwater lakes for the next few decades. Not a lake here and a few more over there — that’s been done, of course. The new work, published last week in the journal Nature Climate Change, looks at ice-loss scenarios for some 1.4 million lakes across our hemisphere. And you needn’t be an ice-fishing enthusiast or lake-hopping snowmobiler to appreciate the bad news in their findings: “An extensive loss of lake ice will occur within the next generation.” The focus here is not only on the relatively few, more southerly lakes that may stop freezing altogether as the globe continues to warm. It also includes the very large set of lakes where ice formation will continue, but in a reduced and unreliable way — starting later, ending sooner, with unpredictable cycles of thaw and refreeze along the way. One example, from the research announcement … [Read more...] about Northern lakes are losing their ice cover at an accelerating rate

After losing both legs, soldier in famous viral photo recovers with sled hockey
When Sgt. Josh Hargis lost both legs to explosions in Afghanistan, he worried about his unborn son. “There was an internal struggle with me because I didn’t know what kind of dad I was going to be,” the Army Ranger explained. Five years after he was injured, Josh is the father of two young boys and his newest goal is to train for the Paralympics and bring home a gold medal for Team USA. Josh, 28, first made headlines in 2013 when, seemingly unconscious in a military hospital, he lifted his hand to salute the American flag as a Purple Heart was pinned to his chest. His wife Taylor posted a photo on Facebook and it went viral. Although he would go on to make a full recovery, learning to live as an amputee was a struggle for Josh. Things changed when a physical therapist suggested he try sled hockey. "Once he started playing sled hockey, he started to come out of that negative mindset," Taylor said. "It was less of a downer, because every day he was getting … [Read more...] about After losing both legs, soldier in famous viral photo recovers with sled hockey

"It was nice to have somebody invested in the sports industry, invested in myself, there to help me make the correct informed decision."NCAA rules governing baseball and ice hockey allow high school players to hire advisers as long as those advisers are paid their normal fees. Also, baseball and hockey players who are drafted are allowed to retain college eligibility as long as they don't sign a contract.Under … [Read more...] about Advisers aid baseball prospects, might do same in basketball
