Canadian Dealmakers of 2016

· March 8, 2017 ·

WHEN LEXPERT, TOGETHER with Deloitte, The Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters, created the Canadian Dealmakers Program in 2007, the driving force was to look beyond the deals that define Canada’s capital markets and celebrate the executives, in-house counsel, lawyers and bankers who actually shaped those transactions. The program works like this: nominations are collected and turned over to an adjudication panel to determine which ones best benefited both their industries and this country as a whole. The panelists, leaders in Canada’s business community, look for hallmarks of excellence. They can range from the creation of shareholder value to the promotion of growth and innovation; deal-making that brings the company up to a new level in its market; stewardship through new legal or regulatory terrain; or even, in the case of banks, the sheer number or value of deals completed in a single year.Once the decisions are made, the winners are recognized at the annual Canadian … [Read more...] about Canadian Dealmakers of 2016

Afghan police pull back from isolated outposts as losses mount

· July 24, 2019 ·

By Hamid Shalizi KABUL (Reuters) – Afghanistan’s badly stretched police are taking heavy casualties as attempts build to set up peace talks with Taliban militants, prompting a move to pull back from vulnerable outposts across the country. U.S. advisers have for years pushed commanders to abandon isolated checkpoints that serve little purpose beyond showing a presence but which act as a magnet for attacks by mobile Taliban fighters, increasingly armed with night-vision equipment. Following a change at the top of the interior ministry last year, officials say 6,452 police outposts and checkpoints all over Afghanistan are being assessed as part of efforts to reduce losses and cut the rate of desertion by police who feel abandoned by their commanders. Abdul Moqim Abdulrahimzai, director general of operations and plans at the interior ministry, said more than 210 police outposts and checkpoints had been closed in 17 provinces and another 200 had been identified for closure. … [Read more...] about Afghan police pull back from isolated outposts as losses mount

The “Initial Interest Confusion” Test – Analysis and Proposal for a Sensible Formulation for Use on the Internet

· March 15, 2011 ·

Introduction The Internet facilitates online commerce and provides a wealth of information to consumers by allowing users to search for a product or brand and to receive results, suggestions, and advertisements.  Internet consumers using search engines are familiar with search-based advertising, where advertisements appear next to search results.  Google provides an advertising service, AdWords.[i] AdWords allows advertisers to bid on search terms, called keywords, and then Google links those keywords to the advertiser’s advertisements or hyperlinks.[ii] When an Internet consumer searches for the keyword the advertiser purchased, the sponsored link or advertisement is triggered and appears either above or to the right of the organic search results.[iii]  Other search engines including Netscape and Excite use programs similar to Google AdWords to allow advertisers to either bid for or purchase specific search terms.[iv]During the first half of 2010, U.S. Internet … [Read more...] about The “Initial Interest Confusion” Test – Analysis and Proposal for a Sensible Formulation for Use on the Internet

Cities Need Autonomous Vehicles Just as Much as Autonomous Vehicles Need Roads to Drive Down

· November 6, 2017 ·

Slowly, in the background of our day-to-day lives, cities and their suburban counterparts have been gaining intelligence. Stoplights are timed and monitored by a suite of cameras and sensors; traffic patterns are tracked and analyzed by Watson-like computer systems; GPS-navigation systems communicate to the grid and identify the most efficient route to a destination when taking into account traffic patterns and other transit options; and even parking usage and patterns are analyzed, allowing for rates to be adjusted based on demand. Up to this point, this transition has been independent of cars and trucks, it’s been about improving traffic patterns and attempting to reduce congestion. But cities face transit issues and are looking for connected, autonomous cars to provide the solution.A monumental shift is upon cities as smart vehicles enter the landscape. These next generation vehicles have the capacity to communicate with each other and the roads they … [Read more...] about Cities Need Autonomous Vehicles Just as Much as Autonomous Vehicles Need Roads to Drive Down
