Prolonged droughts and heatwaves are expected to become more common in the coming decades, with parts of the U.S. already experiencing what scientists call a "megadrought." Droughts are periods of abnormally dry weather that persist for relatively long periods of time. Aside from the wider societal impacts, such as as potential damage to crops and water shortages, droughts can also have a devastating impact on garden plants. So how can you care for your garden during these dry and hot conditions? How does drought damage plants? Drought stress occurs when water loss through the leaves exceeds the plant's ability to pull in water through its roots, Lucy Bradley, a horticultural scientist at North Carolina State University Extension, told Newsweek . This interferes with several important processes including photosynthesis (the conversion of food to energy); transpiration (the movement of water through the plant and evaporation from certain parts, which helps to cool it); the … [Read more...] about How to save your garden plants during drought and heatwaves

Delhi HC asks fruits and vegetable wholesalers to vacate land for water treatment plant
The Delhi High Court has asked fruit and vegetable sellers to vacate a land belonging to the Delhi Jal Board in Najafgarh here to make way for the construction of a water treatment plant. A Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Sachin Datta in a recent order said, “The said water treatment plant is essential to serve a very large part of Delhi and would benefit about 15 lakh residents.” The upcoming plant will have a capacity of 50 million gallons per day (MGD). “Clearly, public interest at large would suffer if construction of the proposed water treatment plant is impeded in any way,” the Bench said while asking the fruit and vegetable sellers to “voluntarily vacate the area” or face coercive steps. The fruit and vegetable sellers’ association had said that its members are facilitating the trade of fruits and vegetables to the tune of about 3,000 tons a day. The association argued that without an alternate arrangement for the present Najafgarh Mandi, Delhi … [Read more...] about Delhi HC asks fruits and vegetable wholesalers to vacate land for water treatment plant
Gujarat sets up desalination plant for industries in Dahej
For the first time in the country, the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) commissioned the desalination plant at Dahej, supplying water to industries. The plant was officially inaugurated on June 17, but the government had put the plant under trial stage for a week’s time. This is the first desalination plant of 100 MLD set up by any government in the country. Dahej, a hub of major industries, is rapidly expanding with new industrial units. Currently, the daily requirement of water for the industries in Dahej is around 200 MLD, which is at present fetched from the Narmada river. Russian troops throw Zaporizhzhia staff in nuclear plant basement: report
Russian forces occupying Europe's biggest nuclear power plant in Ukraine have reportedly thrown plant workers into the basement. The reports suggest it is unclear who is currently ensuring the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been under Russian control since March . Up to now, the plant has been operated by its regular Ukrainian staff on rotation, albeit under intense pressure, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). However, Dmytro Orlov, mayor of the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar where the plant is located, told U.S. government-funded news outlet Radio Liberty on Tuesday: "People are being taken straight from the nuclear power plant… and they're being thrown into basements." Orlov said there were more than a dozen employees affected. Russia has had nuclear specialists of its own stationed at the plant who were sent there from the country's state-owned nuclear company Rosatom. Russia's occupation of the plant has been a cause for … [Read more...] about Russian troops throw Zaporizhzhia staff in nuclear plant basement: report
Nuclear Plant on Fire Amid Russian Shelling, Radiation Levels Steady
Ukrainian government officials report elevated radiation levels near the site of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) disagrees for now, saying levels are steady. Shelling caused fire to break out as the Russian military took over the plant, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, that could possibly be even more dangerous than Chernobyl. Russian missile shelling reportedly caused a fire at the power plant. In a video posted online, a blast followed by fire and smoke was seen at the plant. Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine tweeted after the shelling saying if Zaporizhzhia blows up, it will be 10 times worse than the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He urged the Russian military to cease fire immediately. Russian officials told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that they took control of the territory surrounding the plant. In a letter to the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the Ukraine … [Read more...] about Nuclear Plant on Fire Amid Russian Shelling, Radiation Levels Steady
