I am Jane Doe #9. I am forever known in court documents as Jane Doe #9, and no one can take that away from me. It validates me and my story. But I didn't sleep much the night before June 29, the day of R. Kelly's sentencing for racketeering and sex trafficking crimes. It had taken all day to get from Miami, where I live, to New York the day before, and the following morning, I was dreading getting up. I was anxious and nervous because I didn't know what to expect; when I met with federal agents downstairs at the hotel, it started to feel really real for me. I arrived at the federal court in Brooklyn just before 10.30am on June 29 and was actually dropped off around the back because there were so many paparazzi, reporters and his supporters outside. Myself and the other survivors were nervous, because you don't know what to expect; he had filed motions to get an acquittal or a new trial, but U.S. District Judge Ann M. British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed
Historic British-era Patna District Magistrate's office building, part of the centuries-old Collectorate campus, which was featured in key scenes in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' has been demolished, sending a wave of grief among heritage lovers and Gandhians. Bulldozers gnawed at the elegant two-storey main Patna Collectorate building, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, a couple of days ago, reducing it to a skeletal state. The building was felled as part of the redevelopment project of the Bihar government. On Wednesday, labourers carried away bricks from the mountains of rubble that lay deposited next to what remained of the old building, which once was the seat of the district administration and was said to have been constructed in the early 20th century. The building was also adorned with an ornate iron-made spiral staircase mounted on its western facade. Heritage lovers of the city had earlier appealed to the authorities to rescue its historical artefacts, such as … [Read more...] about British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed

China’s Xi visits changed Hong Kong for handover anniversary
By ZEN SOO HONG KONG (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived Thursday in Hong Kong to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the British handover of a city that his rule has transformed from a global hub known for its political freedoms to one that is much more tightly controlled by the Communist Party. U.S. must ditch ‘Trump method’ in nuclear talks, says Iran
Iran warned the U.S. to abandon the "Trump method" on Wednesday after the two sides opened indirect talks to revive a nuclear deal that was torpedoed by the former American President. But Iranian officials said they were hoping for progress in the talks in Qatar, which come after international meetings to return to the deal hit a roadblock. Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief in 2015, before then U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal three years later. "We hope that, God willing, we can reach a positive and acceptable agreement if the United States abandons the Trump method," Iranian government spokesman Ali Bahadori-Jahromi said. He described the "Trump method" as "non-compliance with international law and past agreements and disregard for the legal rights of the Iranian people". The indirect talks — with the rival delegations sending each other messages from different parts of the same hotel — come just two weeks before U.S. … [Read more...] about U.S. must ditch ‘Trump method’ in nuclear talks, says Iran
No Safety Assurance To LGBTQIA+ Fans Planning To Attend FIFA World Cup In Qatar
Qatar has failed to ensure safety for the LGBTQIA+ fans who are planning to attend the FIFA World Cup 2022, scheduled to be held in the month of November. As a result, the leading LGBTQIA+ organisations are advocating against travelling to the Arab country for the tournament. Homosexuality is illegal and punishable in Qatar. As per the laws, homosexuality can lead to three years of prison imprisonment and, in some cases, even a death penalty. Amid the preparations for the World Cup in a highly conservative environment, The Guardian presented a set of questions to the organising committee in Qatar, raising concerns for the LGBTQIA+ community. These questions focused on the possible discrimination on the basis of sexuality, accommodation in hotels, and other allowances. The authorities failed to give a satisfactory response. Instead, a general response was issued that read, “Everyone will be welcome to Qatar in 2022, regardless of their race, background, religion, gender, sexual … [Read more...] about No Safety Assurance To LGBTQIA+ Fans Planning To Attend FIFA World Cup In Qatar
