Starlink Launches 47 Satellites In Lower Earth Orbit For Better Satellite Internet Connectivity
Elon Musk’s space venture SpaceX has successfully launched 47 Starlink satellites. The Starlink 4-9 mission lifted off at 9.25 a.m. EST (6.25 a.m. PST) on March 3 from pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and was SpaceX’s ninth of a planned 52 launches this year, TechCrunch reported. The mission, flown by Falcon 9 booster “B1060”, has completed 11 flights since its debut in June 2020. The 47 Starlink satellites have now joined 2,000-plus others in the programme’s first-generation constellation orbiting Earth, providing high-speed, low-latency Internet across the globe, even in remote regions. Starlink is currently approved to expand its constellation to 12,000 satellites, though SpaceX has applied to launch a further 30,000, the report said. Thursday’s launch was the sixth Starlink mission of the year already for SpaceX. All of the launches were successful. Hive mind: Tunisia beekeepers abuzz over early warning system
TESTOUR, Tunisia: Elias Chebbi inspected a beehive in a field in Tunisia, minutes after a buzz on his phone warned him of a potential problem. The 39-year-old beekeeper opened a flap in the hive to reveal a low-cost, locally made sensor dedicated to measuring key environmental variables. An app on his phone then warns him if action needs to be taken. “Thanks to this, I can relax,” he said. “It tells me remotely everything that’s happening.” Chebbi has two of the sensors, entirely produced in Tunisia by the only company of its kind in North Africa. He periodically places one in each of the 100 or so hives he keeps, on a grassy hillside an hour’s drive from the capital Tunis. The devices, each costing under 300 Tunisian dinars (around €92 or RM431.55), send live updates on temperature, humidity and the weight of the hive to a central computer. It then analyses the data and helps him react quickly to potential problems – as well as selecting the most resilient, productive … [Read more...] about Hive mind: Tunisia beekeepers abuzz over early warning system
Russia Ukraine War: Russia’s Isolation on Earth Moves Up Into Space
OneWeb, a satellite internet company partly owned by the British government, has canceled an upcoming satellite launch using a Russian rocket and suspended all future launches that relied on Russia, the company announced Thursday after a tense public standoff with Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency. Also Thursday, Roscosmos announced that it would stop selling rocket engines to US companies. The moves, fallout from Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, stand to further isolate the Russian space agency from its Western space partners and limit Russia’s private space activities dramatically. OneWeb’s loss of a reliable rocket provider for launches also poses novel challenges for the company as it had aimed to complete its constellation of 648 satellites in orbit later this year. Prince Charles walks down perilous frozen ice road destroyed by climate change in Canada
Prince Charles has declared the “urgent need to take decisive, bold action on behalf of future generations” as he witnessed the destruction caused to a vital Canadian ice road by warmer weather due to climate change. The Prince of Wales said “we need to listen at least as much as we speak” to help communities around the world in danger of being cut off as a result of the climate emergency. On a visit to Canada this week, Charles met with indigenous communities and heard how they are facing unprecedented hardships, from having their livelihoods stripped away to being forced to flee their homelands. Some groups who have lived and thrived for centuries in some of the harshest environments across the country are now finding themselves on the front line of increasing environmental disasters. Some States Leveraging Expertise in Digital Domain to Indulge in Contemporary Forms of Cross-border Terrorism: India
Some states are leveraging expertise in the digital domain to indulge in contemporary forms of cross-border terrorism, India has said, as it underlined the need to address the abuse of digital technologies by terrorist groups to radicalise and incite violence. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti told the UN Security Council briefing on The Use of Digital Technologies in Maintaining International Peace and Security on Monday that there is a need for addressing the abuse of digital technologies by the terrorist groups to disseminate terrorist ideologies, radicalise, incite violence and recruit the next generation of terrorist actors by taking advantage of the enhanced online presence of the youth. He said the wide outreach of online space has enabled the terrorist groups to take advantage of the openness of pluralistic democratic societies like India by fuelling societal divisions, and sectarian hatred, and supporting anti-democratic movements and … [Read more...] about Some States Leveraging Expertise in Digital Domain to Indulge in Contemporary Forms of Cross-border Terrorism: India
Lessons from Russia for India
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had many impacts, but one area which merits more attention is whether it has produced effects sufficient to alter our understanding of warfare. A perusal of the evidence suggests that there is not any significant change in the nature of warfare. However, there are some key takeaways which have implications for the Indian military, which uses a significant amount of Russian-origin weapons systems. Three claims There are at least three claims made by proponents that the conflict has heralded a shift in warfare. The first is that the battle tank has been rendered obsolescent, because of the highly effective performance of anti-tank missiles such as the American-built Javelin or Advanced Anti-Tank Weapon System in visiting destruction upon Russian T-90s. But tanks have withstood past obituaries. Immediately after World War I, which witnessed the emergence of the battle tank, there were voices, especially in Britain, pronouncing the death of the tank, … [Read more...] about Lessons from Russia for India
