The past two and a half years have been a global crash course in infection prevention. They've also been a crash course in basic math: Since the arrival of this coronavirus, people have been asked to count the meters and feet that separate one nose from the next; they’ve tabulated the days that distance them from their most recent vaccine dose, calculated the minutes they can spend unmasked, and added up the hours that have passed since their last negative test. What unites many of these numbers is the tendency, especially in the United States, to pick thresholds and view them as binaries: above this, mask ; below this, don’t ; after this, exposed , before this, safe. But some of the COVID numbers that have stuck most stubbornly in our brains these past 20-odd months are now disastrously out of date. The virus has changed; we, its hosts, have as well. So, too, then, must the playbook that governs our pandemic strategies. With black-and-white, yes-or-no thinking, “we do … [Read more...] about Five COVID Numbers That Don’t Make Sense Anymore

Presidential office launches new website to communicate with public
The site, "People's Suggestions," will replace the "People's Petitions" page used by the previous presidential office of Moon Jae-in. "It is a communication channel reflecting President Yoon Suk-yeol's commitment to becoming a president who communicates directly with the people," Kang Seung-kyoo, senior presidential secretary for civil society, said in a press briefing. The new site is made up of four sections — a civil complaint and suggestion page, a petition page, a section for proposing videos and a phone directory. An additional page for overseas citizens is expected to be added next month. The presidential office said it will operate the site under the principles of non-disclosure of civil complaints, which is mandated by law; using real names only; limiting comments that serve the interests of particular groups or organizations; and guaranteeing a response before the legally mandated deadline. Kota Kita, where citizens are at the heart of decision-making
Simone Galimberti (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Kathmandu ● Sat, June 25 2022 Since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo was raised to power, Indonesia has become known for being a trailblazer in institutionalizing and localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In simple terms, it means using the global framework of the Agenda 2030 with its 17 SDGs to promote development at local levels by essentially, at least on the paper, involving the people through bottom-up approaches. As we know, Indonesia was the first country to have special legislation that activated SDGs-centered local governance, a true model for many other countries, including the most developed nations. Yet I have been wondering how this framework really works on the ground, and while I am still searching for answers, I tend to believe that any formal governance set up, even the most perfect one and most able to involve and include the people, should become a sort of “open source” framework. to … [Read more...] about Kota Kita, where citizens are at the heart of decision-making
Ford Is Making a Big Change to the Way You Lease an EV
For many a driver, leasing a vehicle rather than buying it outright can be appealing. The fact that most automakers let you purchase a vehicle once your lease is up adds another wrinkle into the proceedings — but if you’ve fallen in love with a particular car or truck, it makes sense to have that as an option. You get to keep the vehicle you’ve gotten used to, the car manufacturer gets a significant amount of money — it’s a win-win for everyone. As Autoblog reports , Ford has announced that it’s getting rid of the ability of leaseholders to purchase their electric vehicles once their lease period is up. An article at CarsDirect has more information on the planned changes. According to a letter that Ford Credit sent to dealers, it’s requesting that all electric vehicles be returned to dealers when the terms of the lease end. These changes are set to affect drivers looking to lease the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit and F-150 Lightning. with old EV batteries . It’s a debate that we’re … [Read more...] about Ford Is Making a Big Change to the Way You Lease an EV
Presidential Office Replaces Petition Website
June 24, 2022 12:17 The presidential office on Thursday shut down a petition website run by the previous government and opened a new website instead. The new website accepts any proposals and petitions like its predecessor but only accept feedback using people's real names. But while the previous one required more than 200,000 signatures for the government to respond, the presidential office promised to respond to any suggestions that are "deemed valid." "There were concerns that the previous petition website could end up favoring a particular support base, and even a single person could post endless petitions using different aliases. We made it clear that the new website cannot be abused by a particular ideology or political group." In other words, the petition website ended up becoming a fierce battleground between conservatives and liberals. Senior presidential secretary Kang Seung-kyoo said the new website "is a communication channel that reflects President Yoon … [Read more...] about Presidential Office Replaces Petition Website

Using music to delay the degeneration of dementia
Music is not just a source of entertainment. It could also improve the mood and well-being of people suffering from senile dementia. That's why the Australian start-up Music Health has launched Vera, a platform that offers personalised playlists to seniors who want to delay the effects of cognitive decline for as long as possible. The app is specifically designed for people with dementia. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 5% and 8% of seniors aged 60 and over suffer from this degenerative condition at some point. Such was the case for the grandmother of Nicc Johnson, one of the founders of Vera. "My Oma (grandmother) had Alzheimer's at a time when dementia was not well understood. "It wasn't until much later in my life I learned that dementia is not a normal part of ageing," he explains on the company website. Johnson and his associate Stephen Hunt hope to help people with dementia and their loved ones fight cognitive ageing with Vera.
