By Letters To The Editor | June 16, 2019 at 4:10 am How has Trump put ‘God’ back in America? Re: “Trump talks about issues that most concern us” (Letter to the editor, Eastbaytimes.com, June 12): I have been puzzled as to why some people approve of Donald Trump. I thank the letter-writer for providing a piece of the puzzle. I do agree with her that he talks a lot. However, since he doesn’t accomplish much, I can’t see how he qualifies as a true leader. I guess talking is enough for some folks. There is not space for me to address all her points so I will just take a couple. Trump may have talked about balancing the budget, but what he has actually done is to greatly increase the deficit by cutting taxes for corporations and the rich. WASHINGTON — President Trump is the only president since 1976 to keep his tax returns private, making Democrats eager to obtain the documents. But progressive lawmakers may not get their wish immediately, despite now being back in control of the House and more importantly, the Ways and Means Committee. There are a number of reasons why the process might take some time. One reason is that Democrats might wait to even formally request the returns through a law that allows certain committee heads to compel the Treasury Secretary to hand them over.Dan Rubin, a spokesman for Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, said he "wants to lay out a case about why presidents should be disclosing their tax returns before he formally forces him to do it.""He is a very policy-driven person, and I think he sees that if we break the glass and pull that alarm, you won't get anything done after that," he added. In addition, the long and drawn out leadership race, in which House Speaker Nancy … [Read more...] about Formal request for Trump’s tax returns may not come quickly, Democrats warn
Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the likely incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press" Sunday that he wants to obtain President Donald Trump's records with Deutsche Bank because they could expose "a form of compromise" with Russia.Schiff told The New Yorker in a profile published last week that he plans to subpoena information on Trump's transactions with the bank because of the German financial institution's longtime relationship with Trump and its past ties to Russian money laundering. Schiff, who Trump has referred to as "little Adam Schitt," said the answer to whether the president was involved with Russian money laundering could exist in the Deutsche Bank records."Well, the concern about Deutsche Bank is that they have a history of laundering Russian money," Schiff told Todd on Sunday. "And this, apparently, was the one bank that was willing to do business with the Trump Organization.""If this is a form of compromise, it needs to … [Read more...] about Schiff said he wants to obtain Trump’s Deutsche Bank records for one reason
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump floated the idea this past week of using tariffs to make America rich, as if these taxes are a pipeline of cash from Asia, which they're not. He displayed a slippery grasp of science as well as trade policy as he set about trying to discredit his White House report on climate change. And his description of a manufacturing revival, as if created by a wave of his "magic wand," was a sleight of hand. Trump's penchant for misstatements did not stop with his own rhetoric. He spread around to his millions of Twitter followers a wildly false claim that people in the country illegally get more aid from the federal government than Americans get in Social Security benefits. The supposed evidence for that was a single instance of the government helping a refugee family — the Canadian government, assisting refugees in Canada. A look at some of his recent statements, complete with grammatical Twitter errors, and how they compare with the facts: TRADE … [Read more...] about AP FACT CHECK: Trump’s thin grasp of trade, science policy
0 Have your say Practical issues like healthcare, the state of the roads, safe drinking water and a living wage helped the Democrats take the House of Representatives in the US midterm elections as Americans turned away from Donald Trump’s credo of power, sex and money, writes Susan Dalgety after campaigning for Susan Wild in Pennsylvania. Jackie picked up her stick, her umbrella and her shopping bag.“I have to go for my bus now. If I miss this one, it’s an hour’s wait for the next,” she said in her soft North Carolina drawl.“I will see you in 2020,” I laughed, giving her a big hug.“If I last that long,” she laughed back. “I’m already 83!” And with that cheery retort, she went out into the dark, wet November night. I am sure I will see her again.Jackie was just one of the many, many lovely people we met on the campaign to elect Democrat Susan Wild to Congress. There were a handful of … [Read more...] about ‘Donald Trump’s gold toilet loses its lustre as US warms to Obamacare’
