A snake-catching company had to be called to a COVID testing facility in Australia after multiple venomous snakes were found on the premises. The testing site in Sydney was temporarily closed while a snake expert arrived to remove the reptiles and later searched the area to make sure they were gone. The reptiles in question were red-bellied black snakes, a familiar species in eastern Australia. Sean Cade, the owner of the Australian Snake Catchers group that helped remove the snakes, told Australian news outlet 9News that staff first saw a "medium-sized snake" on Friday last week followed by a couple of baby snakes on Monday. He said the influx of snakes may have been caused partly by improved weather conditions. A video posted on the Australian Snake Catchers group's Facebook page via Cade showed one of the snakes being coaxed out from beneath a bin before Cade picks it up by the tail and holds a collection bag open for it. Cade told Newsweek the snake that was … [Read more...] about Venomous snakes shut down COVID test center

Bottle containing hopeful messages from teenage girls asking for boyfriends found after 56 years
A bottle containing hopeful messages from two teenage girls asking for boyfriends has washed up after drifting in a U.K. river for 56 years. The corked glass bottle was discovered by a group of volunteer litter pickers who were cleaning up the Humber Estuary in Lincolnshire. Inside were two scribbled notes written by 15-year-old pals Jennifer Coleman and Janet Blankley dated August 9, 1966. The love-lorn pair wrote descriptions of themselves and invited teenage boys who found the bottle to write back to them. Janet wrote: "I am 15, not bad looking, long wavy brown, chestnut hair and 5'4. "Anyone interested, a photo will be exchanged in person. Boy who writes. No one under 16 or over 18." Jennifer's note said: "Anyone who finds this please contact J Coleman. "Please write if you are a boy under 18 over 16. Please send a photo and one will be exchanged. Thank you." Jake Daniels is a hero – more LGBT+ football players should follow suit
C ongratulations to Jake Daniels , the Blackpool FC player who has come out as gay aged 17, becoming the first active male player to come out at the top of the British male game since Justin Fashanu , who tragically took his own life in 1998. Conversations have spiralled for decades about why male footballers haven’t come out when statistically there are obviously gay men playing – and by contrast, the women’s team is replete with “out” players. Daniels becoming the first openly gay professional player in 30 years should be rightly praised, but questions remain: namely, why has it taken so long? In many ways, football feels like the last bastion of sexual intolerance; the last sport where you can’t say you’re gay, even though rugby, cricket and swimming have all had openly gay players for years. And while not enough praise can be heaped on Daniels for coming out, the reality of the scale of representation at the top of the Premier League is woeful. While football … [Read more...] about Jake Daniels is a hero – more LGBT+ football players should follow suit

Bizarre optical illusion of chess board baffles internet
A bizarre optical illusion showing two sets of seemingly different chess pieces is baffling internet users. The image has gone viral after being posted by science journalist Tom Chivers on Twitter , with the post racking up more than 2,000 likes. Despite the recent interest in the illusion, the image was actually created by researchers Barton Anderson, from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and Jonathan Winawer, who is now with New York University, for a 2005 study published in the journal Nature . The illusion shows two sets of chess pieces in a smoky environment: one which appears to be white, and another that looks to be black. The seemingly white set is placed in an environment of mostly black smoke, while the seemingly black is placed in one featuring mostly lighter smoke. But while the two sets of chess pieces look different, the truth is they are actually identical—meaning that each piece is the same as the corresponding one below it. The fact they … [Read more...] about Bizarre optical illusion of chess board baffles internet
Spitting cobra found in prayer room of family home
A South African snake rescuer has described a difficult encounter with a cobra after he was called to a home in Reservoir Hills in Durban. Nick Evans, a reptile educator and conservationist, ended up being face to face with an angry Mozambique spitting cobra—a highly venomous snake native to Africa. The snake is named for its ability to spit its venom. The snake that Evans had been called to rescue had been seen in a hole in a wall of a family's prayer room. When he arrived, the reptile proved elusive. "When I arrived, I stuck my phone in the hole in the wall, on video mode, hoping to spot the snake," he wrote in a Facebook post. "I heard it. Cobras have a distinctive, short hiss, when they're grumpy. But I couldn't see it on the camera." Struggling to find the snake, Evans resorted to breaking apart part of the room as he spotted a gap which he suspected the snake had traveled through. "I felt really bad," Evans wrote. "But the homeowner was adamant we get this snake … [Read more...] about Spitting cobra found in prayer room of family home
