Liverpool’s 10 best bargain transfers since winning the 2005 Champions League

May 27, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

As Liverpool prepare to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final, they'll be well aware their run to Paris wouldn't have been possible without the help of some bargain buys. For all the importance of big-money stars like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the Reds' success goes beyond that. And it's not just the current squad who have benefited from the services of players picked up on the cheap. Some 17 years on from the Merseyside club's sensational 2005 comeback against AC Milan, Mirror Football looks at 10 of the players signed for less than £15m who have served Liverpool well over the years. Not just those who are likely to be involved in Paris this weekend, but some who helped the Reds deliver long before manager Jurgen Klopp took the reins. Pepe Reina - £8.81m A number of Liverpool's pre-2010 signings come close to making this list. Maxi Rodriguez, Martin Skrtel and Yossi Benayoun just miss out, for example, but 2005 signing Reina makes the cut. … [Read more...] about Liverpool’s 10 best bargain transfers since winning the 2005 Champions League

Kremlin Officials hopeful Russia can win Ukraine war in months: Report

May 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A new report from independent news outlet Meduza shows that Russia's top officials are not giving up on declaring victory in Ukraine and rather hoping to ramp operations up in order to obtain a military win as early as the fall. "According to Meduza sources, despite the fact that the results of the Russian army are clearly not in line with Moscow's original plans, the Kremlin is again discussing a possible assault on Kyiv—and even hoping for a full-scale victory in the war," the Russian- and English-language news website wrote on Friday. One source close to the Kremlin was quoted by Meduza as saying, "We are going to kill [the Ukrainians] anyway. Most likely, by the autumn everything will be over." "Sooner or later, Europe will get tired of helping - this is both money and the production of weapons, which they themselves need more. Closer to autumn, it will be necessary to negotiate [with Russia] on gas and oil for the heating season," another said. The latest reporting, which … [Read more...] about Kremlin Officials hopeful Russia can win Ukraine war in months: Report

Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy

May 1, 2011 by www.newsweek.com

Of the things Donald Trump has said since he began hinting at a presidential candidacy, the one that most requires challenging is his assertion that people keep asking him to run. Journalists are vigilant defenders of truth when the subject is President Obama's birthplace or OPEC prices. They are credulous when it comes to explaining populist movements. They assume the impetus always comes from the demand side. People are "fed up"! There is an "anti-incumbent sentiment" in the air! Such demand-side sentiments can explain a lot—but not why certain members of the public might wish to be governed by a billionaire yahoo. For that, it is just as important to look at the supply side. Trump's candidacy comes from a sociological fact—the steady rise of plutocracy over the last quarter century—as well as a public sentiment. The truth is not universally enough acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of political influence. Diversifying one's portfolio to include … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy

Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard: What to expect during closing statements

May 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Johnny Depp's high-profile court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard is set to come to an end on Friday, after several weeks of testimonies placed an often uncomfortable spotlight on their tumultuous relationship. Depp, 58, has filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard, 36, over an op-ed published by The Washington Post in 2018, in which she stated that she was a domestic abuse survivor. Heard did not name Depp in the article, but his lawyers have argued that it was obvious she was referring to the actor. Heard is countersuing for $100 million. As each star took the stand at Virginia's Fairfax County Circuit Court, they made a host of allegations against one another, including drug and alcohol use , explosive confrontations, and even a claim that Heard defecated on the couple's bed. Depp and Heard, whose divorce was finalized in 2017, have also accused one another of domestic abuse . Both have denied the allegations made against them. Since the trial began last month, a … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard: What to expect during closing statements

In US-China Cold War 2.0, Beijing Upping the Ante to be Recognised as World’s Pre-Eminent Power

December 2, 2021 by www.news18.com

The seemingly uneventful Joe Biden-Xi Jinping meeting last fortnight exposed the two diametrically opposite positions, raising concerns on increasing destabilising portends to the regional and global orders in the coming months and years. Beijing is clearly upping the ante to be recognised as the pre-eminent power in the world. United States president Joseph Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met virtually on November 15, 2021. The meeting lasted nearly four hours. Both had a phone call in February and September, with Xi delaying recognition of the new US President after elections. Unlike in the Trump administration before when Xi queued up to meet the US president at Mar-o-Lago in 2017, this time around Biden scrambled for the meeting. Biden flagged the red lines by stating that he “will continue to stand up for its interests and values and, together with our allies and partners, ensure the rules of the road for the 21st Century advance an international system that is … [Read more...] about In US-China Cold War 2.0, Beijing Upping the Ante to be Recognised as World’s Pre-Eminent Power

Ukraine Forces May Retreat from Luhansk as Russia Advances in the East, Says Kyiv

May 28, 2022 by www.news18.com

Ukraine said on Friday its forces may need to retreat from their last pocket of resistance in Luhansk to avoid being captured by Russian troops pressing a rapid advance in the east that has shifted the momentum of the three-month-old war. A withdrawal could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin closer to his goal of capturing Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk regions in full. His troops have gained ground in the two areas collectively known as the Donbas while blasting some towns to wastelands. Luhansk’s governor, Serhiy Gaidai, said Russian troops had entered Sievierodonetsk, the largest Donbas city still held by Ukraine, after trying to trap Ukrainian forces there for days. Gaidai said 90% of buildings in the town were damaged. ”The Russians will not be able to capture Luhansk region in the coming days as analysts have predicted,” Gaidai said on Telegram, referring to Sievierodonetsk and its twin city Lysychansk across the Siverskiy Donets River. ”We will have enough strength … [Read more...] about Ukraine Forces May Retreat from Luhansk as Russia Advances in the East, Says Kyiv

NYT Reporter: Will Biden Target Co. that Made Gun Used in TX Attack?

May 27, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

New York Times reporter Michael D. Shear asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at Thursday’s press briefing if Joe Biden would go after the company that made a firearm that was used in the Uvalde shooting. Shear asked Jean-Pierre if the president would target the company that legally made the gun that was legally sold to the the individual who then used it to carry out the heinous Uvalde attack. “Apparently the company that sold the shooter his rifles received a $3 million PPP loan under the last administration. Do you know if there’s any effort by this administration to claw that money back?” Shear said. “So I — this is the first I’m hearing about this, so I would have to go back to the team and look into it. Do you know the name of the company?” Jean-Pierre responded. Shear answered, “Yeah, the name of the company is Daniel Defense — D-A-N-I-E-L Defense.  Apparently, they received a, I think, $3.1 million PPP loan right at the beginning. My colleagues have … [Read more...] about NYT Reporter: Will Biden Target Co. that Made Gun Used in TX Attack?

Fierce Presidential Election Erupts in Pacific Island Nation of Kiribati amid China-Taiwan Tussle

June 19, 2020 by www.news18.com

The presidential run-off in the Pacific island nation of Kiribati between a pro-Beijing leader and an opposition candidate sympathetic to Taiwan is the most aggressive campaign in the country's history, according to former president Anote Tong. The vote, scheduled for June 22, could open the door for Taiwan to reclaim the strategic ally it lost to China last year, with the opposition campaigning on a platform critical of the diplomatic switch. Kiribati, the site of a mothballed Chinese space tracking station in the central Pacific, has a finely balanced parliament with loyalties evenly split between President Taneti Maamau and ally-turned-rival Banuera Berina, who broke from the government last year citing concerns over the switch. "Primarily, it has been about the Taiwan-China issue," said Tong. "In my experience, it's the most aggressive campaign that I've seen," describing a bidding war of uncosted policies and combative claims over whether or not Kiribati will benefit from … [Read more...] about Fierce Presidential Election Erupts in Pacific Island Nation of Kiribati amid China-Taiwan Tussle
