An Australian mountaineer scaled Mount Everest on Monday, completing his quest to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents in record time, an expedition organizer said. Steve Plain scaled Everest on Monday, 117 days after he began his mission in Antarctica. Iswari Poudel of Himalayan Guides Nepal said he got a phone call from Mount Everest base camp saying that Plain along with two guides reached the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) peak at around 7 a.m. and were descending. The 36-year-old Plain, from Perth, began his mission by climbing Mount Vinson in Antarctica on Jan. 16. He followed that with Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Carstensz Pyramid in Papua New Guinea, which covers Australia and Oceania, Mount Elbrus in Europe and Denali in North America. California lawyer David McCaslin has climbed a mountain both figuratively and literally.McCaslin, a Yuba City personal injury lawyer, reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro this summer, according to the Appeal Democrat. Before he was able to achieve that lifelong dream, however, he lost more than 300 pounds.“My biggest failure was my weight, and now it’s turned into my biggest success,” McCaslin told the Appeal Democrat.He decided to get serious about losing weight in October 2010, a time of emotional turmoil, the story says. McCaslin’s father, his law partner, had recently died; and his wife, Lisa, was recovering from cancer. “Annulkah” is a fictional job candidate who illustrates the BigLaw reality: If you didn’t go to a “super-elite” school and worked rather than, say, climbing Mount Everest, you aren’t all that interesting to hiring partners.That’s the conclusion of Northwestern University professor Lauren Rivera, who interviewed hiring managers as part of a study into the hiring practices at top law firms, investment banks and management consulting firms. In all she interviewed 120 hiring managers, 40 from each type of institution, and created fictional job candidates with differing resumés to gauge reactions. A Virginia man believed missing on California's Mount Whitney is an accomplished hiker and marathon runner who has been determined to summit the peak since a failed attempt last year, his family said Tuesday. Search and rescue teams combed the state's tallest peak on Tuesday for a third day to look for Ling Dao, who was reported missing June 14 after he didn't show up to work. Snowy, icy conditions were complicating the search in an area that spanned about 30 square miles of high-mountain terrain, said Carma Roper, a spokeswoman for the Inyo County Sheriff's Office, which is leading the search. Dao, 41, flew to Las Vegas on June 11 and planned to climb Mount Whitney on June 12, then catch a flight back to Virginia the next day, Roper said. When he didn't show up for work, colleagues notified the sheriff's office. Family members said Dao was in excellent physical condition.
